Yeah I did see a few articles on the net about people configuring it from there phones as they couldn't get the browser to work.

Just having a look at Xclaim as well the X-i3 looks to be a good one as it does AC. I am not sure on the coverage area though.

@sbiddle - whats the coverage like?

What aspects make UniFi annoying to use in a residential environment? Do you just mean that you need to be more technically inclined to set it up?

I have been more than happy with my UAP-AC-LITE.

Yup you either need a dedicated computer or controller for them. A typical residential installation has their laptops or devices replaced every 2-3 years so the computer that runs the controller software installed by tech1 is long gone when tech2 comes to visit and get something changed. Tech2 has to reset the unifi and reinstall the controller software on a new machine to do something he should be able to do with a web interface.

Or if you have a Raspberry Pi you can install the controller software on there without needing a dedicated PC

My home PC is on 24/7 anyway as it doubles as a media server, so I have configured the UniFi Contoller to run as a service. But as others have pointed out, once set up you don't need the controller running all the time.

I personally don't like the idea of having to use a cloud controller. What are the guarantees for how long Rukus will support any given product?

I have been keeping current on the firmware and haven't had any real issues with bugginess with my UAP-AC-LITE. The only minor issue I've had is that the band steering initially seemed a little hit and miss with my iPhone 6 (although always worked well with partners iPhone 6 Plus and my iPad Air 2), but that has improved a lot with later firmware revisions.

Anyone know the circumference that the UAP-AC-LITE covers?

Dimensions of them are on the specs of them, they are smaller than the pro, the pro is the same diameter as the old unifi series and can go onto the old ones mounts which was a huge bonus for me when upgrading.

Do you mean it's coverage/range?

Obviously the environment it is in can effect it's range dramatically.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

That's it, actually went into PB Tech yesterday to check them out. Hopefully they are part of their Boxing Day sales.

Awesome I was looking for that as well. Hopefully the holidays will have some sales so I can pick one up.

For anyone looking at buying multiple UniFi APs be aware that the PoE injector is only included when buying them individually and not in the 5-packs.

I'm not sure about 3-packs (or even if you can get 3-packs on the new AC range for that matter).

And only the ac pro uses proper 802.3af POE, the rest are passive so will not just plug into a switch without an adapter which last I looked at was not available - only an older one that only passed 100 megabit for the old series APs - might be instock now but that drove me to spend the extra on the 5 packs of the pro instead of lite.

Doubt you'll find Unifi's on sale anywhere. Go WiFi are the NZ distributor and have their one sale a year which was last week when they had a minimum of 20% off just about everything.

I got my AC-Lite from Computer Lounge a couple of weeks back when they had 10% off, brought it down to $175.  Cheapest price I could find in NZ.

Unless you need 5 of them it's still cheaper to buy them individually anyway, which means you'll get the PoE injectors included. Just wanted to point it out just in case.
