andrewNZ: I have a separate router dedicated to home automation. Openhab on raspberry pi is is the only thing connected to both networks.
Currently all my devices bar one have my own firmware, and all are controlled exclusively via openhab.
Are you just using the Basic UI for control? Or have you made yourself a HabPanel template?

I really should get around to doing this. Need to make several as it seems that some devices I have get found by others apps since they use the same little wifi module in them (one is a version of the limitless bridge I guess I could just unplug for now since I have not used it in about a year)
Hmmm turns out some IoT devices such as the Hue Bridge may have to be on the same subnet as my own network in order for OpenHAB to be able to see them and control them.

I have openHAB on my main data VLAN and all IOT devices on an IOT VLAN with no access to anything. I only allow port 1833 out of the IOT VLAN to a specific host on my data VLAN, which happens to be my MQTT broker. So I can communicate in/out to the IOT devices via MQTT. I have setup little MQTT bridges for things like my Xiaomi sensors/buttons, Xiaomi vacuum, and Nuki smart lock. This allows things to be locked down nice and tight, but still provide access via MQTT.

Do you have any Hue gear?
Sony
Nope, all lighting is Zwave controlled.
That's the thing. I am on the same subnet as OpenHAB. The Hue Bridge is on a different subnet, but through firewall rules, I can ping the Hue Bridge from my personal network, just not the other way around.

andrewNZ: I'm using habpanel.
I don't have much automation at the moment. I have a few temperature sensors, as well as my hot water and heater towel rail.
Do you control the water heater switch or do you simply monitor its temperature?
I'm thinking of automatically turning mine off at 7pm and on again at 9pm to take advantage of the Electric Kiwi free hour of power. But I haven't found a switch yet.
