@kotuku4:

Is it worth having faster internet connection, if you are reliant mostly on Wifi?

With the Wifi and connected devices being the limiting factors?  Definitely need really good routing and Wifi.

It really depends. I am on a 900 Mbps connection and can get up to 650 Mbps on my WiFi so in my case I think it is worth.

@Mosbo From experience, the Asus RT-AX88U is just an overpriced and terrible router.

I couldn't agree more, specially with the second part! Because if it works and it's amazing, I'd pay $1000 for it! But that's not the case, at all!

Surely this is just a configuration issue? What are your wifi settings? Have you done an RF Scan to see what channels others are using so you don't conflict? Tried disabling QOS features like Airtime Fairness etc...? I'm not familiar with the Asus settings specifically but I bet you can just tweak a few things and it should scream.

Also, what is your client you're testing with and how far away from the Asus are you?

Hmm... I don't think it is configuration as I tested several different setups and WIFI configs. I have a MACBOOK PRO and a gaming PC with a TP-Link Archer TX3000E MI-MIMO Dual Band Wireless Adapter.

Standing by the ASUS router does not help. QOS features are all disabled. The router is in Bridge mode.

Bear in mind that 650Mbps is will very client dependent. @freitasm as well as the AP model, what client device were you getting that speed on?

I think the the faster plan as worth it even if you don't get that speed just for the much faster upload. 20Mbps just doesn't cut it in the era of cloud computing.

Suggestions:

  1. Disable Universal Beamforming,
  2. Disable Multi-User MIMO

I usually have the FritzBox 7590 as router and mesh controller plus a FritzBox 7490 as a mesh AP (both models WiFi 5). My desktop (with a D-Link AX3000 WiFi 6 PCIe Adapter) gets those speeds with this setup. I have just yesterday replaced the FritzBox setup with a new D-Link COVR-1870 Series WiFi 6 mesh system for review and got similar speeds. I have also tested with a Chromebook, Huawei P30, Lenovo e14 and Huawei MateBook 2020 13 - all consistently get those speeds over WiFi here.

these iperf tests across the local Lan or internet speed tests?

Speedtests to local servers and Fast. Could run iperf but I am pretty sure if getting 650 Mbps on a 900 Mbps service then iperf would be up there too - and I think the whole exercise in this thread is about Internet performance.

Turn off any Auto stuff. I don't know what else might be in the "Wireless mode" dropdown but Auto probably isn't what you want. Set your channel manually to 149 for 5Ghz. Disable Roaming Assistant, Disable AMPDU, Leave Multi-user MIMO Enabled (don't know why someone else suggested to disable that), Disable Beamforming.

See if anything improves?

Try disabling 160mhz too, and fixing the 5Ghz to 80. If you have a 160mhz client then it would be recommended to leave it on but worth a try anyway.
