TheMantis: Swap over the connections to either the start or run winding. Just one, not both, doesn’t matter which. This can be done using the brass strips if you want, it’s what they’re for.
Thanks. Any idea from the ohms test in the video which is which?

I can't tell with any reliability from the video although white/white (the two on the same row, not the one with the red crimp), red, and blue are likely to be the windings. You're going to have to take the capacitor out of the circuit to get accurate readings. Take a good photo and physically label all the wires, disconnect them and you'll easily be able to identify the windings. Be careful when removing the nuts from the studs as the plastic body can get quite weak over time. The winding with the higher resistance is the start winding (smaller wire = more resistance). Electrically it doesn't matter which winding you reverse the connections to. Also, I see a loose earth wire - make sure this drill press is earthed, it is a critical safety feature.

Hi Mantis,

So a higher reading is the start winding? Please see the video here https://youtu.be/I8TqQGrm_NQ

So it's looking like I just swap the red and black over?

Black and red are showing the sort of resistance I’d expect for a start winding. Swapping them over should do the trick. Everything goes back together exactly as it was originally except black and red swap places with each other. Just make sure you properly test before livening.

Great, thanks for the help.

By the way, the whole machine is Earthed at the main input terminal box which also sends power to a light I fitted.

The run winding will be connected directly to the phase and neutral, therefore I would suspect the leads for the run winding are the wires on the bottom of the studs the phase and neutral are connected too.

Forget what I said above, I forgot about the isolating switch.
