I've still got an old iPhone that I'm hoping can be put to use as a fairly simple remote camera at some stage, but I've still got to overcome the power & image transfer issues I'm having... not being Pi-savvy I'm trying to keep things very simple.

Thanks.

The one thing I found with using an iPhone is that there's no way to start or restart an app automatically if the phone powers off/on, glitches, or app goes into background due to messages popping up. That was a show-stopper for me, otherwise the phone provides a nice packaged unit.

GSVNoFixedAbode:Things to change for later:

  • increase image frequency to 30 minutes
  • wide angle lens for camera module
  • add extra wait after 3G modem connects to allow for delayed network handshake so time updates correctly before image is taken and datestamp applied.

If anyone else falls down this particular rabbit hole, there's one more key thing to remember.  For the love of your sanity, remember to build in some form of remote/local update facility! Being unable to update a script on-site or remotely is a Royal PITA!

Next time I'll add in a local AP to be active during the 5 minute image cycle.

Or, if you don't mind a bit of fiddling, have the Pi toggle one of its output pins every five seconds or so. This is monitored by an Arduino acting as a watchdog which, if it misses a few toggles, pulls the RUN pin on the Pi down to reboot it.

(Some of the BCM SoCs have a built-in watchdog, but like a lot of other BCM products it only sort-of works some of the time).
