My feelings heavily replicate the OP

4, 4S, 5, 5S, 6+. Every year was the mandatory upgrade. If I didn't give my 6+ to my daughter, I would still have it. But I like the X. Smaller, no bezels, same screen size, no home button. Ill just keep it a good while I'd say. I dont upgrade my car every year to get that extra bit of chrome on the new model.... Same with phones now

Edit: In fact I only update the OS on it and the iPad Air 1 and iPad Pro 12.9 whenever I get round to it, no rush

I feel it is similar to Desktop PC's and Laptops, phones seemed to have reached their apex of maturity for the technology available and unless there is a major breakthrough which seems unlikely I feel we are going to see tweaks and gimmicks to try and sell. The Notch for example is something personally I feel was a waste of time innovation to find a solution for a non problem.

I hope that instead of trying to find that killer new must have the OEMS concentrate on refining what we have now in terms of build quality, materials, sustainability and recycling. This may mean that they will need to review their sales forcasts as I feel demand for upgrades etc will fall off of the next few years in the same way we saw the decline in desktop device sales.

Much like OP, I have had 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5S, 6, 6S, 7+ and currently on X.

Also have had iPad 1,2,mini, mini 2 and currently on 9.7 Pro along with a 7 year old iMac.

I actually have zero desire to upgrade any of the current devices as they are all so functional.

Unlike the old ones, the bumps in tech don;t make them any more appealing, as they do what I need them to and then some.

The only thing I am likely to replace any time soon is the ageing iMac, and that'll likely be to the new (rumoured) mini and a large screen, so we can set up the office/rumpus with a decent screen for watching movies and use it as a secomd lounge (which we do now, but 21.5" is a bit small).

I know that image stabilisation & excellent slow motion videos are important to families, and for kids doing back flips into pools and the like, but for stills a phone like an Iphone 5s compares pretty well even in 2018. In fact if most of your photos are going onto facebook and instagram a flagship phone is not a necessity at all. Some water proofing might be valuable though.

Image stabilisation will not help with freezing motion. It is only useful for handheld shots of still subjects with a moderately slow shutter speed, or possibly a macro or telephoto shot. I can't see many iPhone users finding themselves in that situation very often.

OP listed many reasons why he moved from 6 to X. Only the last was for the new phone features. Do you think that the other factors will not repeat in the future - the older devices that were passed on to family members may need replacement for a variety of reasons. What phone will you select then? Surely not last year's model? I would imagine that a significant number of people upgrade regularly as they are on the "bandwagon", and many upgrade for other reasons (passing phones to others, replacing damaged devices, etc.)

If one had to provide or replace a family members phone, and you find that the best way is to upgrade yours to the latest model and pass on your older device, are you on the bandwagon or not?

Fair observation. To be fair, I was more referring to getting off the bandwagon for this cycle. In my case, I pretty much won't be doing any upgrades largely/solely influenced by a desire to give a relatively new hand-me-down device to a family member until my mum's 6S is officially no longer supported. My current gen Ipad pro will become a hand-me-down to mum because I'd like her to move on from the god-awful Ipad 3 which she still occasionally uses when managing her small business. She'll then send the Ipad Air 2 there and use the Pro as her home device.

I was seriously considering upgrading from my 7 - but the prices of the XS Max really took the shine off that idea. I'm finding myself feeling quite disappointed, mainly due to the price, in the product announcement.

When I was talking to friend about it the other day, he said "Yes, it is expensive, but when you consider what is the one thing you use daily, to check your bank, take pictures, emails, web, music, reading, etc., is it not worth the cost? ..." - now this logic may not resonate with everyone, but I think he has a bit of a point - but with all that said, I still find myself not quite amped to drop the money.

I will wait until I can head into a store and hold one in my hand - maybe then I'll feeling a bit differently. Right now the 7 is doing alright. Still has life left in it, although could use a battery replacement.

The watch is important to me for tracking my running which is my main hobby, and I would quite like to have 4G connectivity to check messages when I am out on long runs. However even if the NZ telcos announce support for the 4G Apple Watch it's unlikely that I will upgrade it within the next year as it doesn't make sense from a cost/benefit perspective.

I realise there is no right or wrong when it comes to fashion, but wearing an apple watch is akin to wearing a casio calculator watch. I joke mock a friend who bought one.

I'm still on my iphone 6s Plus, and it really works perfectly apart from needing a battery replacement. But, I am thinking of upgrading to the iphone xs max. Not because the iphone 6s plus is slow or lacking functionality, but because I am bored of it. And, I like OLED, and it will be free.

I just don't understand that kind of thinking...an Apple Watch (like any smart watch) has multiple uses for multiple reasons...and people are prepared to pay a lot of money for these devices - just look at what people pay for the Tag Heuer Modular Connected.

To be disparaging of a device like an Apple watch on a tech forum says quite a lot more about you than it does about those that wear them...

I have the stainless steel and sapphire version and I think it looks a lot classier than a Casio watch but, like you say, it's entirely down to personal taste.

I live on and for my iPad and use it for pretty much everything - it’s my constant companion. It’s an Air 2 and nearly four years old - but it has been a great device.

I have the go-ahead from the Domestic Planning Dept to get a new one and I was disappointed when the recent Apple presentation finished without the expected announcement of new iPads.

It now looks likely that they will be announced next month and I’ll be in for the Pro 10.5” (or equivalent in the new screens with smaller bezels etc) - probably 256GB.

The DPD has a 2017 10.5” Pro and it’s noticeably nicer/better than my Air 2 - so I’m looking forward to leap-frogging her.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
