CYaBro: We’re in a similar situation here with almost no cell coverage from any provider.
I’ve found that we have to put our phones into airplane mode and just have the wifi on for wifi calling.
Otherwise like you’ve mentioned the phones will try to connect to the tiny amount of signal they get sometimes in different parts of the house.
If you’re on a call at the time it does drop when the phone tries to connect to the cell signal.

Are these devices 2degrees-branded or parallel import / other carrier handsets?* As John said, the handset software should always use VoWifi for calling no matter how good the cellular signal outside is. They should only drop off VoWifi if the Wifi itself is proving too poor to maintain connection. If they were sold to you by 2degrees directly, consider logging a ticket with Care, and when you've done that let me know the details and I will make sure it is passed on to the handset team.

*iPhone excepted as it uses the carrier bundle for whatever SIM is currently loaded so it doesn't matter who you bought it from in the first place.

All iPhones here bought in NZ. :)

I have Shortcuts setup on my iPhone so when I plug it into the car and it detects Apple CarPlay it turns off Airplane mode automatically so the phone will work once it gets a good signal.

And when I disconnect it again I've set it to prompt me to turn it on again or not, and not to do it automatically.

Waiting on that info from you via DM so we can pass it on to the appropriate team 🙂

Linux: @neb How did you get on?

It's a Samsung Galaxy S10 running Android 10. Will have to check whether it's a 2Degrees-branded one.

@neb If it was a 2degrees provided handset the option to enable it is under ' settings ' then ' connections ' and you should see the option to turn on Wi-Fi calling

It's enabled, that's not the problem, it's that it seems to prefer the weak-to-nonexistent cellular signal to the strong WiFi one:

I'll be going over there Friday to have a look, I can provide more details then.

@neb You can see the handset / phone icon beside the Wi-Fi signal indicator and as already stated it is not related to the signal from the cell site the issue is 100% something else

Look into the Wi-Fi setup

What am I supposed to look for in the WiFi setup?

Also, that screen shot to show WiFi calling enabled was taken god-knows-where, not necessarily where the problem occurs, so the icons are meaningless.

Ask the end user if the above photo was taken when at home!

I've also experienced issues when in very low signal areas, on a 2D handset, when I had a reasonably good wifi connection (speedtest 10+mbit each way). Are there any minimum connection requirements? Wifi calling symbol was there, but other end had trouble hearing me.

So issue is not mobile coverage if the handset is attached to WiFi calling

Yes, but they're pretty low - you only need on the order of 100Kbps each way for the audio + overhead. One-way-speech is a thing that happens on VoIP sometimes and we are always on the lookout for such problems. We have also spent a lot of time doing stabilisation work on the IMS core in preparation for the wider VoLTE rollout which has improved VoWifi as well.

That said, we don't control the Wifi or the internet between the handset and our gateway so VoWifi will always be a lower quality experience than VoLTE or even 3G circuit switched services. If your router is capable you could always try upping the priority or dedicating some bandwidth toward the gateway. At least that makes sure your own other traffic doesn't stomp on VoWifi.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

I thought our wifi calling issues could have been due to the wireless internet we had previously but we've now been on gigabit fibre for a couple of months and do still have the odd issue.
EG: Even though my iPhone Xr says 2degrees Wifi Calling at the top left calls don't always come through and go straight to voicemail.
Then it can take a long time for me to get the SMS that there is a voicemail waiting.

No issues with speeds now that we have fibre and do get great wifi speeds on our phones.
Just did another test now and got an average of 82.4MB/s down and 69.2MB/s up and ping 57ms to the 2degrees Auckland server from here in rural Oamaru.
