Oblivian:
mgnz: I sent this email to Orcon this evening:

        Hi Orcon,
According to the UFB Rollout maps, my property is not going to get fibre for over a year, and there is no guarantee that it will be getting fibre in the year after that.  So in effect what the email below is saying is that you are reducing the capability of my genius modem in order to make life easier for yourselves.  Then you suggest that in order to regain functionality that you have just removed, I need to spend my money on a new ethernet switch.

This seems a little unjust to me.  I feel that if you are going to take something away you should replace it with something else.  Either discount the price of the services that I currently subscribe to, provide a switch free of charge, or show some love with a data cap increase.

While telecom and other ISPs have been increasing their data caps for free over the last little while, it seems a bit ridiculous that Orcon would go against this trend and actually reduce the quality of their service.  I understand that the modems will need to be upgraded to account for the fibre rollout, but there must be a smarter way to do this.

Looking forward to a positive response,

M.

It will be interesting to see how they respond.

Probably with the same solution posted a few messages up perhaps?...

Got the following response a couple of days ago:

Hi Marc, Thank you kindly for getting in touch with us with regards to your Genius modem. Our recent service changes have been coupled with data increases, to caps of 60, 200, and 1000GB plans available to all customers, whether they be on fibre, for reduced rates. The modem itself is provided, on your plan, free of charge and ties hand in hand with the Genius plan. For this reason, any alterations made to the Genius plan; such as firmware upgrades, to effect the functionality of this device. This is covered in our Terms and Conditions with regards to the alteration of plan configuration and so on. In the case that you were renting your modem we would be able to potentially place a credit for these charges for the inconvenience, however you are not paying any rental fee's on this modem. Thanks for contacting us.The Team@Orcon

SO they tell me that there are new plans available with higher data caps for a fee, but this doesn't really help.

This sentence: " For this reason, any alterations made to the Genius plan; such as firmware upgrades, to effect the functionality of this device." doesn't make sense.

Then they tell me that I could get a discount, if I was paying for my modem, but because I have tied myself to them for 24 months (showing a bit of commitment) it is unavailable.

They still give no indication that there may be another option wrt changing the modem configuration after the firmware upgrade as a previous poster has suggested.

To be honest, I want to add a Gb switch to my network anyway, but this is not the way to build user satisfaction Orcon.

Wow, that response is rich with "free of charge" line. Nothing is free, let's not kid ourselves.

The fact that the modem have a backdoor allowing ISPs to fiddle is rather troublesome. This will play out in two ways, 1. The ugly way, security compromised and backdoor used to inject/sniff data, widespread orcon user suffering from identity fraud and/or on line theft. 2. The less ugly way, nothing happens backdoor not compromised, consumers used to the idea of having backdoor accessed by companies, more devices in the future ring home and "manages" the experience.

I'm sure the up side is less fuss, general optimism about people and good business sense etc, though it's still a pretty bad type of security, obviously one I'd rather live without.

Remote provisioning of devices is pretty much the norm in the ISP world these days - TR-069 is a fantastic standard.

XPD has the new firmware.

It takes quite awhile to flash as many Genius modems as there are out in the wild.

I wonder if this is why my Genius randomly bricked itself and I had to do a factory reset the other day

Our phone stopped receiving calls but everything else was ok. I noticed the following drop down box had been changed to UFB. I've changed it back to 'ADSL' and helpdesk pushed through a phone update so I am not sure what fixed the issue but thought it may be relevant somehow?
