Hi

Have purchased a new TV (Samsung 55F6400) and am about to go out and buy an external USB hard drive so that we can record to it that directly from the TV.

Just realised that the $100 or so for the external hard drive could be put towards a Freeview recorder... just wondering of there is any advantage in doing this.. aside from the dual tuner aspect (not sure if my TV support this of not.. have not really looked) is there any good reason to go one way or the other?

Definite advantages in going to a Recorder vs TV USB. With the USB HDD you can only record what you are watching and the TV has to be on to record anything.
Recorders win hands down with EPG, Timer Record, multiple tuners, plus many other features.
My Panasonic does all this plus records from external inputs (Sky decoder) and I can transfer recordings to my PC via built in WiFi.
As for features and reliability - you get what you pay for.

Slightly off topic, but how do you transfer your recordings to PC?
I've got the Panasonic DMR-BWT835GZ and can watch recordings on a PC, but can't see a way to actually copy them.

I tried to use a USB HDD on my Samsung D6000 TV.

Hopeless!

Didn't have any ability to allow for over-run on programmes, hence we were always missing the end of shows. You HAD to set up the recording using the EPG for timing.

We do use a HDD to play back downloaded programmes - that works well.

Anyway, went with MYSKY and have been happy since!

I use Twonky 7. Bit of a bugger to set up (not very user friendly) but once working no more problems. I believe there's plenty more Server software will work. Much easier to edit out the ads on the PC using VideoReDo.
