I actually used teletext almost daily up until 2 years ago. No longer though.

Actually a lot of old people still use it. Many don't have the internet anyway. The benefit of it is thaat it is very quick to load, and new tvs will load the page instantly after turning a tv on.That is more than can be said with the internet, where you have to wait for a computer to boot up. I cant see why it can't be retained, as there are emulators that can run the software on new pc's, but i guess it is about making money selling the spectrum.

TVNZ have been cutting a few services lately. Another is the BBC world overnight service which I used to record some programs on. Now the only way to get it is to sign up to tvnz's / skys igloo service, or sky tv. So looks like they are trying to push people onto that.

I remember the folks had a dedicated NEC Teletext box back in the day, was an amazing service as a kid.

I have fond memories of Teletext from when I was younger, and going through things this morning before it was switched off, I felt a bit sad. But we can't keep propping up uneconomic/outdated services that few people use. An economy/business needs to be efficient to survive the tough times and progress technically. Not sure what the spectrum/BBC comment is about, this isn't a conspiracy.

I've spoken to a number of older people lately about this and the feedback ranged from I haven't used it for years to oh that clunky old thing was terrible.

The reason TVNZ is cutting BBC World is because it costs them $400,000 a year to broadcast it, whereas informercials will make them money. The reality is that the financial thumb screws are getting ever tighter at TVNZ and this is what happens when your only funding is from commercials.

Supposedly. Although that isn't much over a year, about $1000 per day for all NZers. But then again, how much did the tax payer have to pay for trash like NZ idol, NZs got talent, Xfactor, much of that goes offshore in licensing fees.

OTOH, those programmes got high ratings so that suggests that the NZ viewing public is happy to pay (indirectly) their tax money to fund those programmes. Additionally, the ratings would have meant advertising revenue for the broadcasters - which is what keeps them on air to begin with. People moan about popular programmes like NZ Idol and say that they're trash and give the impression that they want television filled with nothing but expensive highbrow niche programming. The reality is, people enjoy the hell out of programmes like NZ Idol and you can't have the highbrow niche programmes without the 'trash'.

As far as $400,000 not being much over a year... TVNZs recent After Tax Profit for the year ended 30 June 2012 was $14.2 million. So, 2.8%. TVNZ then returns a dividend of $11.3m to the shareholder. That leaves $2.9m and $400,000 becomes quite a lot.

Remember that when TVNZ shows 'trash' it earns revenue on that 'trash' and then pays a dividend to the shareholder which then gets spent on nice things like roads and hospitals. BBC World doesn't earn jack for TVNZ because they can't put their own advertisements in there. So not only does it cost the $400k but there's the loss in advertising revenue during those 5 or so hours.

People like to bag TVNZ and say "waah they should just sell it!" Well, who would you rather have the dividends? The government or Rupert Murdoch?
