Jaxson: On the West Coast though they are turning off the analogue and not bothering at all with terrestrial. In that case a set top box is the only way really, be it freeview or Sky.

I would say that the topology vs. the population vs. the cost would be too expensive for broadcasters.

I really dont see why they cant just deploy DVB-T alongside all the rural broadband stuff. They are already pulling fiber and putting up towers with antennas on them so its not a huge addition. And many small towers would be awesome for inbuilding coverage vs the oldschool way of sticking one on a hill somewhere and hoping for the best.

Because the government sold out and gave the contract to the encumbant cellular operators.

That would just make too much sense, and involve different parties actually working together.
