The way it works is you cannot use the Record button or do red button recording from the EPG if the MHEG-5 info does not give you permission. Use the timer record if you want to record something and the MHEG-5 isn't letting you.

Is that for real!? Can set a timer but can't just hit the record button!? That's got to be a mistake. I like that there is a way around the restriction but it's still got to be an oversight by Pixel Magic. I wouldn't count on this staying.

In the EPG, when browsing the whole week for new stuff to mark for recording I find myself mindlessly pressing the up or down arrow keys. I noticed that when in the recorded programmes list I can use the station selector button to page through the old recordings.

Feature request: It would be nice to be able to use the same paging in the EPG.

Haven't come across the unable to record problem, has always let me record. Only channel I haven't tried it on is parliment tv... but then who wants to record that? :)

If you are looking at the EPG and want to change the channel you are looking at you can key in the channel number to jump to the channel you want rather than going to it one channel at a time.
e.g. If you are looking at the EPG for say channel 2 and want to look at Prime next key in 10 and it jumps to channel 10 Prime. You can then jump back to channel 1 by keying 1 if thats what you want to look at next. Getting to prime takes forever if you have not deleted the channels that you don't watch.
Not sure if that helps or not as you may have already found this out.

I couldn't record an old Hitchcock movie that was on Stratos on Saturday night. I was looking at it in the EPG and there was no record option at the bottom of the screen, where it shows what the different coloured buttons do. Pressing the red button also did nothing. I didn't try the timer recording trick because I wasn't really that fussed about watching it.

Not! :P I guess I didn't explain myself well enough. :)

I want to be able to quickly look through the whole week of the EPG for every station to look for any new programmes I might be interested in recording. Since the scrolling is so darn slow I figured a paging button would be a big help.

Is Apple the only company that has a clue?

Hell, I could even put up with a slow scroll if it at least auto-repeated! But, no, I have to press the arrow button for every line in the EPG!

Just a tad frustrated here. And I don't expect there is anything better out there for Freeview.

Yeah I really hate this too. I noticed the other day, while I was at a friends house, that MySky has auto-repeat on their remote.

Possibly, but definitely the only company to invest a bit of development money into a user interface. That's the part the customer actually uses/interacts with.

Actually from memory the Magic has pretty good menus, and it only drops the ball when you move to the standard SD old TV based MHEG5 freeview EPG.

Um ok, well the Magic TV when sold elsewhere has a different EPG.

Taken from the the image gallery for a Hong Kong variant here:

In New Zealand you navigate through all the standard (and very good) magic TV menus.
But that whole look and feel stops when you have to use the EPG which is the standard freeview MHEG5 EPG.

It's been commented on by others that this doesn't look anywhere as nice as the rest of the Magic TV menus. The official freeview guide works best on older SD CRT TV's as it's nice and big and clear. On an HD TV you could have gone with something a lot more detailed but still clear and fast to read.

Hope that explains what I was getting at?

Well, the display resolution is not even slightly relevant to this conversation but I get your point that the native MagicTV EPG maybe faster than Freeview's one. And it might have paging and auto-repeat too.

My complaint can be interpreted as directed at Freeview NZ for making their EPG so damn slow if you like.
