GoDaddy was never a good corporate citizen - SOPA, sexism, unethical behaviour from CEO, animal rights abuse. Now you may be fine with all that ...

There is that, but also their interface is horrible to use, and they are constantly trying to upsell everything, some of which you have to carefully opt out of to avoid buying.

I love iwantmyname because it's just a nice clean interface and experience.

I have registered several Domain Names and supply Hosting for my clients. (Small businesses)

I use Webdrive in NZ that has Domain Re seller option to register my clients domain name. Costs me about 21 to 25 dollars depending on the type of domain name. My clients own the domain and I can manage them.

For hosting, I use Dreamhost.com - I have the unlimited domain name hosting plan.
If you have a domain name registered and want a free hosting with all the wordpress and CMS abilities - I can help. or
If your website is a very simple one, I can setup a hosting account for free (it does not really cost me anything). - PM me your requirements and I can help :)

I find Godaddy ok for solely registering international domains, and have been using them for 12 plus years. But don't like the upselling. But they are quite expensive now for renewing domains unless you can find a coupon, but there aren't many of those these days.
I would recommend using a provider that has been around for many years, and have a good reputation.

I do this kind of thing as a side business. I register international domains with namecheap.com and NZ names usually with discountdomains.co.nz. I make websites with Wordpress, using free or paid themes. I generally put email onto Gmail or www.fastmail.com as shared servers suck for email - they get classified as spam, spam filter is rubbish. I host my sites with hostgator but as their support is going badly downhill I've started putting clients onto namecheap.com hosting - I find their support fast friendly and excellent.

I don't like GoDaddy. Their website is confusing with constant attempts to trick you into buying extra things. They make cancellation difficult. Their support (when I used it a few years ago) wasn't good, front line were ineffective and slow.

thanks all. I'm going to need to take time to digest this. the more i think the more domain names i want to register to "make sure it's all covered". not good!

I'm a huge fan of freeparking.co.nz for domain name registration. Never had a bad experience in 8 years and 50-ish domains. Prices strike me as more than reasonable.

Some of the international registrars are DODGY. Things like large penalties if you fail to pay the annual registration on time.

Not all webhosting is created equal, as I don't have this problem with my clients sites and email, although I do pay more for the hosting. To be on blacklists their servers must be spamming, which you often get with cheap hosts who don't adequately monitor their servers. One solution is to get a dedicated mail IP setup.

True. The cheaper the hosting the more sites on one IP, the higher the risk. Even when it's managed I just find it less reliable, email ends up in spam boxes more often. Web hosts just aren't that interested in email I've found. The solution as you say is a dedicated IP or outsourcing email to a specialist - like gmail/fastmail, who have much better spam filters than say spam assassin.

I think that is a little harsh. Your average business owner outsourced domain/web stuff to a 3rd party who can be pretty useless. Not necessarily the business owners fault - their trust was misplaced.

Discount Domains UK tried to charge me a relatively large fee (GBP50?) to move my domain to another registrar, when the annual hosting fee was around GBP10. I got around it by transferring the domain to the national registrar and then out, for a low fee. Their fees are stated on their website, but it's not something you think to look for when you sign up. Vaguely relevant to the conversations, plus I want people to know.

I dont deal with places with cheap, discount etc in their names generally. If they want to name themselves after being cheap then it kinda sets low expectations.
