I have always hated schools because they have no money and you spend ages cleaning up after students, only to find a teacher that wants to know why her ipad cannot accept cd-roms but wants to load a game designed for windows 95 onto all of them.

I think if there is a change to N4L and they are standardising everything in every school, then it can only be a good thing.

Previously the school had no money or worked in their own limited budgets.

Some schools were great at I.T and others were severely lacking.

But now if the government says "Here have a bunch of free services" or the government is spending a bunch of money and the school can either take it or leave it, their only option is really to take it.

By moving every school into the same platform, systems etc, students get more equal access to IT- especially in an area where enrollment zones prevent your child from going to one of the previously "good" primary schools with the IT because you lived out of zone.

Sometimes problem is too much expertise of IT people that manage it like their own empire and configure it to meet their "special needs".
They often favour bespoke software solutions that gives them a intellectual challenge rather than a thinking from a business and low maintenance perspective.

And too often the result is complete and utter garbage informed by a total lack of any knowledge or experience.

Not bitter.

And then the teacher in charge leaves, only to be replaced by another that decides that the entire IT empire should be rebuilt in an entirely new form, only for them to leave... rinse, lather and repeat.

Yes - been there had that! Then a regime change brought PC's and Office into the mix, now they're gone and all services (including printing) are google along with google chrome devices. There are murmurs of discontent amongst the staff with the overall experience, so I suspect the strategy will change again.

Chromebooks + Google for Education is amazing having seen it in action. Also, Chromebooks are super affordable.

No software to install, update, or configure. No OS images to create and manage. User management is a breeze, backups are managed, profile 'roaming' is baked into ChromeOS and just needs a Google account. Sharing Google cloud folders is seamless. Document collaboration is a piece of cake. Viruses are nowhere to be seen (yet). Everything is just so easy from an IT pov (you just provide Internet/wifi/networking)

From what I've seen teachers complaints are basically "we don't have Microsoft word and it's confusing (aka slightly different ui) in Google Docs"

Hope the MoE allows these Google for Education schools to continue with their IT system.
