IMO the writer of this article is just using "bad computing practice" and leaving his saving to the end, where as documents should be saved FIRST, before any changes are made. We've all got into this slack habit of not saving our docs until we've finished typing, when we should be saving them before we even start typing.

Also, OneDrive/SharePoint saves multiple file edits, even the autosave ones so previous versions can be easily retrieved via. Version History, but it appears that the writer doesn't know that.

Typical of the type of blogger who blames Microsoft for their own lack of knowledge.

The public clouds are not for me. Hence private clouds (or cloud clusters) are!

You have Version History and File Restore within OneDrive. Only time I have issues with this for End-Users are the ones that scavenge a file (i.e. sales proposal) to use for another pitch etc and they make all their changes, then click Save As.

Whatever I do I need Sharepoint. We, many of our contractors and many of our clients use it routinely so it's just convenient to continue to use the platform.

Spam filtering is a concern - currently outsource this to a third party.

I'm not worried about the ongoing licensing fees. It makes budgeting simple, compared to paying for new one-off licences sporadically.

I also like the ability to licence more than 1 machine - I'll able to have office on my private Surface Pro as well. I'm sick of open office on that.

Because all the other companies in the group are switching to O365 (some already have) and we will be last to switch, our in-house IT team will develop competence with O365, so I'm comfortable that transition will be smooth.

I'll look into the one drive address issue, although it looks resolvable with a shortcut or two?

The only thing I forgot to mention, I'm running W8.1 - my machine didn't qualify for a free upgrade to W10.

There's also lots of stuff that we've talked about during Microsoft Ignite this week which should help if you have multiple organisations within the group that are all using SharePoint from different tenants that still need to collaborate with each other. I recommend you also have a look at Microsoft Teams if you are interested in SharePoint, and I've been talking with some of my Partners about how they can look at leveraging Teams and SharePoint together within an organisation as some of our resource around this isn't overly clear.

Same last year with AWS. I'd rather have a public cloud service go down for a while, than have my own kit go down and have to scramble people to fix it at any hour of the day. But this also illustrates that it's not enough just to put a service in the cloud. If that service is important it should also be geographically resilient and backed up. The tools are there so that in theory a service should never go down if it's in a public cloud, but it's very rare to see a service properly architected for public cloud, in my experience.

Yes exactly the situation with my friend (small H&S certified handler business). It's how he has worked for years. Had zero appreciation of the change in approach when saving Office 365 docs to the cloud. I'm not sure he's got his head around it even now. Some people just get locked into a certain way of working and get totally thrown when they need to change.

Yes, very true.

Then again, they are ordinary office workers trying to get their job done. They are not interested in reading the change log / what's new section. They want to use the tool to get their job done. Their primary function is not 'understanding IT'. Even for me, as an IT expert, often it requires a lot of training to undo this muscle memory.

[rant] That the tool changes while they are 'handling' it is not ideal. We as technologists should have realized that actually a lot of people work like that. Surely we could have built in some logic into the software to say if the 'Save as' function is used and the new filename is significantly different, we should 1) ask the user if this is a new document and revert back to the original version before it was opened or 2) silently save the changes since the last open as part of the history for the new document and revert the opened file to the last version before the opening of the document. [/rant]

Understandable. Before the Next-Gen OneDrive Sync Client (rolls off the tongue don't it?) came along, I was having the design, deploy and train web-only implementations of SharePoint Online. The early iterations didn't hang Subsites and DocLibraries off the Team Site so Office didn't know about them.

The training method for a new Document was to go in SPO, select New Document, which takes you into the online version of Word or Excel, they'd then have to click somewhere that would allow them to name that document, then and only then could the select Edit in Word/Excel. Its the equivalent of navigating in Explorer to the folder you want, right clicking and selecting New Word Document then double-clicking to open once you've named it and I've yet to see anyone who does that.
