Wow, where did you get yours TheUngeek? I didn't think Desires would have 2.2 pre-installed so fast.

Clove. newstock that arrived to them last week.
I charged it, turned it on, logged into accounts.
Then went looking for how to update and found the software data screen and it said 2.2!

Ok, whats the deal with memory?
I'm down to 99mb free.... and I have installed bugger all. In fact is was down to 140ish mb before I installed anything.... Where's it all gone??
Is there a way to see what's on the internal memory and using the space?
By that I mean what is taken up by the os etc, not just the apps and widgets.

If you use adb to mod default install location, I think you can install any app on sd card without rooting.

That's pretty normal on a stock 2.2 device.

To find out what's using all the space, you'll have to root your phone and then execute this command on your PC using ADB:

adb shell du /data/* | sort -nr | more

To get some free space, you could go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications, sort the list by size, and start moving the big apps to the SD card (if its supported) one by one.

eXDee: If you use adb to mod default install location, I think you can install any app on sd card without rooting.

Not unless the app explicitly supports being able to be installed to the SD card - which, at present, represent very few apps in the market. If you want to install any app to SD by default then A2SD+ is the way to go.

Get Systempanel app to see whats going on with memory, active apps, CPU etc.

Thanks for that, sorta glad to here it's not abnormal!
I already have apps2sd but only a few are able to be moved.
Also found how to do that in froyo without an app. Have to go through each app on its own though.... I guess as time goes on more apps will be updated to be sd capable.

I'm not wanting to root it, didn't get the chance to anyway as it came with froyo preinstalled.

Hey Jerry thanks for that link. I did this just after 2.2 came out but have since done a reset on my phone and have been searching for this link again without success (until now).

That looks good.... But the problem I would have is knowing which ones need to be internal, and which ones are fine on the sd.
I'm guessing you can enable that, and if something doesnt work, you can then used the apps2sd function to switch it to internal?

At the bottom of the article there is an update on what this person found to be good or bad on the sd card. Widgets and items needed on boot up should be kept on internal memory as far as I can tell. If problems arrise you can, as you said, switch the install back to the previous location.

And no worries kiwitrc!

"I should point out that it’s preferable to install certain apps to the main memory, since it will take a while before the SD card becomes available when you start your phone. Applications installed on the memory card will also be unavailable to the system each time you mount your phone as a disk drive. The internal storage is probably quicker as well, even though Google claims that “there is no effect on the application performance so long as the external storage is mounted on the device.” In general, apps that integrate with the Android OS and that often run in the background is better to install on the internal storage, while games and most other applications will have no problem chilling outside on your SD.

Update: Homescreen widgets should be installed to the internal storage as well. I noticed that LauncherPro, for example, won’t recognize widgets stored on the SD card when you start your phone, because when the app is launched, the memory card is still unavailable"

You can still root the phone if you want- there's a new method for stock 2.2 phones. The biggest advantage of rooting would be App2SD+, which will automatically install stuff to your SD card, and you don't need to worry about widgets or other app compatibility issues.
