The a1 i bought was over the gst limit and the random Chinese phone web sites lie on the customs form anyway. One thing i didn't realise was the a1 doesn't have nfc so no mobile payments for my boy. Get the a2 which doesn't have nfc.

I got the same for my boy and the A1 has been great.  I brought it from one of the random Chinese web sites after much deliberation and it worked out ok.  I think if I was doing it again right now I would go for the A2 with the bigger screen.  The biggest thing are that the snapdragon 625 has awesome battery life and that it's Android one.

@Gurezaemon

Did either of you have any issues with Customs/GST?

Thanks

Are you having issues? There was supposed to be some rule changes on the 1st of October.

Not yet:)

Just want to check how I am likely to be treated if I bought it from say AliExpress vs buying it from say Supero.co.nz in NZ

My post should say it was under 400 not over. Can't edit posts on mobile for some reason. Most of this Chinese sellers will do under the limit to register for gst so in some ways this could be simpler as there is now no gst at the border under $400.

completely wrong :-)
"There is a common misconception that items purchased from overseas websites for less than NZ$400"

In fact, there is a push to collect gst no matter what the purchase cost .
Chances are you wont get pinged. Customs cant check every package , and cant check the 'declared' value on every item coming in.

If customs does pick out your package to check for duties/gst, they will use what they think the value is, not the bogus declared value.

That was the case before 1st Oct.  The IRD web site now says that it's up to the seller to collect it:

http://taxpolicy.ird.govt.nz/news/2018-05-01-gst-imported-low-value-goods-proposals-launched

I think there is a very low chance of the Chinese sellers being above the 60k threshold.  Even if they were they would claim that they are not and NZ IRD would have no way to prove it.  I assume that means that these goods now fly through a GST free portal but as these changes are new it's untested territory.

This proposed new rule where offshore seller collects GST will not apply until 1 October 2019 (at the earliest).

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Good point!  I guess we get another 12 months before Amazon stop shipping to NZ to avoid the hassle of collecting tax.
