Unfortunately you can't pop down to Telecom or Vodafone and buy a SGS2 with a 'vanilla' samsung rom, if you could then you would be more than happy with the regular OTA updates.

In my opinion Telco customizations are leading to a whole bigger problem as they maybe don't have the infrastructure to keep on top of the required updates for all of their supported phones.

Back to the OP if it were me in your position I would (and yes i am a biased SGS2 owner :P) I would look towards getting an S2 for the following reasons;

* Out of the box it is a great experience lacking nothing in usability

* It is one of the favourite androids at there at present and the unofficial support network is collectively spending crazy amounts of time and effort tinkering which is leading to a number of great custom rom's if you want to go down the tweaker's track, there are vanilla AOSP roms, tweaked samsung factory roms all the way through to heavily themed roms that plain scare me :P

* SGS2 has officially been announced for Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 upgrade sometime next year, this means that there will be factory support and upgrade paths made available without the potential issues of tweaking unofficially

Sometimes you are better off buying the latest version of an older model than you are buying an unproven brand new freshly released model

paulmilbank: Like has already been said, the big name ones should all get updates and new features. I would imagine people expect it now that their device should be able to get to the next major release due to the Iphone allowing you at least one major update, but sometimes 2.

"Should", but hardly ever do..

KiwiTT: So android users why do you do it and can you explain why you simply do not wait for the manaufacturer's patch.

htc magic (sold) - rooted but never flash the phone and patiently waited for it to be updated to 2.2 (vodafone firmware)

milestone 2 (sold) - i like the motoblur interface and never found a single reason to root/flash it.

defy (current) - rooted and flashed with cyanogenmod 7.1. stock rom is 2.2.2 (motorola updated it from 2.1/eclair). i wanted gingerbread and customisation that cyanogenmod offer

sgs2 (current) - not rooted nor flashed. currently 2.3.3 (vodafone). samsung already announced that ICS update in quarter 2, 2012. i will wait for the stock touchwiz update

Reading this article, it shows that many android phones are simply abandoned by their manufacturers.

Why Don’t Android Phones Get Updated?

That’s a very good question. Obviously a big part of the problem is that Android has to go from Google to the phone manufacturers to the carriers to the devices, whereas iOS just goes from Apple directly to devices. The hacker community (e.g. CyanogenMod, et cetera) has frequently managed to get these phones to run the newer operating systems, so it isn’t a hardware issue.

It appears to be a widely held viewpoint that there’s no incentive for smartphone manufacturers to update the OS: because manufacturers don’t make any money after the hardware sale, they want you to buy another phone as soon as possible. If that’s really the case, the phone manufacturers are spectacularly dumb: ignoring the 2 year contract cycle & abandoning your users isn’t going to engender much loyalty when they do buy a new phone. Further, it’s been fairly well established that Apple also really only makes money from hardware sales, and yet their long term update support is excellent (see chart).

In other words, Apple’s way of getting you to buy a new phone is to make you really happy with your current one, whereas apparently Android phone makers think they can get you to buy a new phone by making you really unhappy with your current one. Then again, all of this may be ascribing motives and intent where none exist - it’s entirely possible that the root cause of the problem is just flat-out bad management (and/or the aforementioned spectacular dumbness).

Why should I get one when it will be orphaned in a matter of months or worse.

I believe, if you "patch" your phone with a non-manufacturer supported OS, and you then develop a problem or fault, the manufacturer does not need to honour any warranty.

I don't want to be an "uber-geek" and get all hacking to have the latest OS, I want a phone the manufacturer will support for 3 years at least.

Show me one Android manufacturer that has supported its handsets for that long with the latest OS release.
