Much the same re: leaving the house. Wireless charging is a bit of an ecosystem piece, in that once you've bought into it, getting a device without it renders all your wireless chargers useless. For me, despite having had various devices that supported it over the years like the Lumia 1520 and Galaxy S6 edge+, wireless charging didn't really kick in as an almost-must-have feature until I got an iPhone 8 Plus - aha! No more need for bloody Lightning cables! Reno 10x, thankfully, uses USB-C, which was not necessarily a given in OPPO-land until fairly recently.

Wireless charging becomes about propping my device up on a stand on my desk so notifications are visible while working, having it charge while doing so is effectively a bonus. Were the device low on power to the point where I wouldn't want to pick it up to reply to something, I'd plug it in. Reno 10x has had such excellent endurance that I've not missed the feature.

Do recommend picking up a spare VOOC charger for the office, that's a handy thing to have, and they're reasonably priced at ~$29.

On another note, I was delighted to find that the retail demo units of Reno 10x have local photos preloaded to showcase the benefits of the cameras in NZ specifically. I have never known any other vendor to load such localised demo content, what a nice touch.

I do have a spare VOOC charger already, and it's nice to have to make sure I always stay fully charged. My friend gave me his since he didn't need it from his OnePlus 7 Pro purchase from PB!

I was about the wireless life too, until I realised it's far too slow for what I would need it for. It was nifty and a neat feature but as it turns out, not totally necessary. I found having all USB-C devices to be what I'm leaning more on now.

That's very nice re: the photos! I can't wait to use mine for travels and taking pictures at games and gigs with that zoom.

Speaking of which, my phone already has that tint as of a few minutes ago, how about yours?

I have not observed any change in tint. Had switched Night Shield off earlier today to be sure. Have you tried playing with the colour temperature slider to see if that helps? I generally prefer my devices a little warmer given most are at cold temperatures out of the box and it's fairly rare to get great calibration by default.

Turns out the update did add something of note, however, as there is now a toggle under Display settings for "Low brightness flicker-free eye care," aka DC Dimming.

That's a much more intense tint than I was expecting. I am reminded first and foremost of an oddball scenario in which someone upgraded from a Pixel 2 to an S10, and upon restoring their backup via Google's backup service, it also restored the Night Light setting which was completely inaccessible from within Samsung's settings UI, and the phone would shift tint at a set time everyday with no way to turn it off.

Did you set up fresh or restore from a backup, and if restored, which backup/restore method did you use?

Bingo. I've managed to fix it through factory reset - turns out the OP7Pro backup I had moved (through Drive backup) its Night Light settings across to the Reno 10x. Have gone the past few days with no hassles now (except for maybe some battery draining). Plus the free UE Boom arrived today, too. 😂

Will just get stuck restoring who knows what data and never finish, and with the potential for it to restore settings that can't be accessed on the device, bad times.

And yes, it really is. I loved the 7 Pro, but I really can't stand curved edges. It would've been near perfect for me, but after using it, the S10+, and the P30 Pro after a while, I wanted to go back to flat screens. I will miss aspects of those phones especially Oxygen OS and the 90hz display, but I'm quite happy with the Reno since for me it's dead in the middle of those three in terms of what I'm looking for in a phone and will stick to it for the foreseeable future.

Just a quick question about your usage, though - do you tend to keep everything on when it's in your pocket (like GPS, background apps, etc), or do you have some battery saving habits you have?

That’s fair. I’m not fussed with curved screens particularly in either direction. Although I appreciate the ease with which they lend themselves to sideways swipes and the feel of them, much of the same can be accomplished with sufficiently rounded glass edges (aka “2.5D”). I do find that the curved edges make devices a little easier to reach one-handed. My favourite phone both in terms of ergonomics and tactile interaction remains the LG V30, and to some extent I still miss it, such a joy to use.

I’d have suggested taking a look at the V40 and Huawei Mate 20 (the amateur/unprofessional Mate, not the Pro) for the flat screen factor, but the Reno has popped up as a credible alternative complete with 855/great in-display scanner/good camera, it’s great to have more options to meet specific needs instead of being in a market that’s limited to just Samsung and Apple. Looking forward to more cases cropping up, as the bulky in-box case increases the Reno’s width more than I’d like.

Re: battery life, I do have a fairly specific device setup routine that comes with the territory of testing a new one every other week. Preloaded Facebook services get disabled quicksmart, along with Play Music and Movies and occasional other pieces of Google bloat. Data is always on, sync is always on, GPS is always on albeit usually “Device Only” rather than “Send all the data about cell towers and every WiFi network in range to Google” mode, exchange email push is set to a peak/off peak schedule, and I’m fairly meticulous about denying permissions to apps that don’t need them. I use third party browser apps with dark modes, and dark modes in every app that will allow it. Bluetooth is on all the time for a wearable and usually several sets of headphones throughout the day. I do a lot of web browsing, news, emails, calls, and messages, mostly for work. Will occasionally run multiple SIM cards. I rarely install new apps outside of the ecosystem I’ve settled on and am inherently suspicious of apps in general.

Owned all the iPhones Plus, gave up on iPhone after the 8 Plus and don’t care for the X range.

For devices like the Reno, Huawei, and Xiaomi, I’ll whitelist a handful of apps via the app switcher lock-in-memory function to ensure they’re not booted out by the infamously aggressive battery saving methods and keep an eye on the battery for any egregious drain. At this point I know where the baselines should be and whether a device is suitable for my workflow or not. The Reno 10x (with AOD off) has thus far exceeded my expectations.

I’ve had to jump to another device for a bit for testing but I think I’ll go back just as soon as I can get a slimmer case. Looking forward to the upcoming dark mode that’s been teased for RealMe devices (OPPO’s Redmi-competes, not yet available in ANZ).

Received the CPH1919EX_11_A.11 update early this morning, brings the July security patch. Nice! One of the very first devices globally to get this.

In direct comparisons to the P30 Pro, the Reno 10x is better at focusing with the periscope. I travel for work every week and taking photos out of the windows of planes has become something of a hobby. Sometimes with pretty spectacular results.

Agreed, I took it with me to a few gigs and it was even able to do portrait at 6x zoom! The videos I took as well came real close to iPhone quality, very impressed!
