ScuL: he is a good fellow but he will never be able to fill the footsteps left behind.

I think the point is that he isn't going to... they're not naïve enough to think they can.

Evans and whoever else they bring in will take things in a different direction, whilst, CMH will doubtless do what they've been doing on Netflix or wherever.

As a car guy, who's enjoyed new TG, as well as the more car focused older TG, it's great as it'll be like having a dollar each way.

If CE & co suck, I don't have to watch them - if CMH keep doing their thing, I can watch them if I choose (and quite likely I will).

I don't see a down side. Besides, as mentioned earlier - there's always Fifth Gear!

ScuL: I've watched Top Gear for many years, and quite frankly, although I am fond of cars I didn't watch the show because it was a car show. I mostly watched it for its entertainment value, largely driven by the powers of Clarkson, Hammond & May. They have this magical "click" between their personalities turning simple scenes into something hilarious. The banter is what generated the ratings, not necessarily the cars.

They often made light of this by referring to themselves as a motoring show, or a travel show etc.  It was a lads show about cars and doing fun things with them.

The likes of why don't you do a serious car review etc was asked often:
