Still waiting for a decent performing (<5s to 100) decent handling (adaptive suspension and dynamic steering) Estate/Touring for ~100K.

Closest is the e-tron which is 160-200K depending on options and it's more an SUV and relatively rolly, compared to a 3 Series or A4 Series BMW/Audi.

You should look at the Jaguar i-Pace, sounds like it could fit your wishlist.

Edit: Oh, sorry. You were looking for an estate. They are going out of style, aren't they? I hear Volvo is looking at stopping production of theirs..

Most manafacturers still produce them, and as long as they do, I'll be buying one.

The i-pace in case you weren't aware sits between $160-200K

Golf R Wagon is great - shame they don't sell them here, though you could import from AUS...

Oh. I see what I did. Sorry OP, my comment on Estates was actually meant for the EV thread and I cross posted it by accident. Please disregard my comments.

Thanks all. A lot of food for thought. I think I’d prefer the outback but my wife is set on a SUV.

The Skoda range of station wagons and Mazda 6's are worth a drive.

CX5's are a pretty nice place to sit... but there will no doubt be a refresh around the corner soon to get it to the interior trim levels of the new Mazda 3.

Recently purchased a low mileage later (2015) model sante fe with most of the bells and whistles, love it. The 2.2 diesel turbo has stacks of grunt and really nice to drive/travel in. The wife is happy with it and it’s great for out of town travel, nice roomy inside and has the extra 2 seats at the back that could be used in a pinch.

Have you considered a Prius Alpha (also known as V)?  Since they are imports, they may be too old for you (but I just got a 2013 with 20k on the clock--really -- for $18k).  Lots of room in the back. 1.8 L hybrid, of course. Slightly less economical than an ordinary Prius, because they are heavier.  It's terrific.

If you are looking at a Forrester I would also look at an Outback.

+1. We are currently on our second Outback and it is highly likely our next will be an Outback as well. I bought our first Outback 4 years ago after test driving Kia Sportage, CX5, Hyundai ix35 and the Forester. When we replaced it last year, I had another drive of a CX5, but the Outback won out again. Well built, drives like it is on rails, well-spec'ed, great fuel efficiency and huge rear cargo area.

Thanks. What year Outback have you got? We are looking at a 2015 model this weekend.

Sorry not sure what you mean by op's?  Our budget is up to $60k. We'd prefer to spend less of course.

The car is mostly for my wife and child. So safety is a major consideration.  It would be the main car on the weekends and holidays.

We’ve bought a Holden Acadia, was $55k for the LT AWD.

Has all the safety features as the more expensive models (rear camera, parking sensors, blind spot detection, lane keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, cyclist and pedestrian detection, speed limit sign detection, rear cross traffic alert). drives nicely and has a lot of space. All 5 seats in the back have anchor points for the kids, the two outer middle row seats are isofix.

Fuel consumption is as advertised about 9L per 100km when it’s AWD, but select it back to 2WD and it is about 8L.

For that budget you could get a Mazda CX5 Takami - same 2.5l turbo engine as in the CX9, and with a very nice interior.

Or, if you want something larger with seven seats, potentially even a CX9 Takami - https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1877835931&rsqid=9e921e5efc324c3c9d54ff1bcc7fbf57-001
