Apparently General Motors are ditching Carplay support, presumably so that they can use their own proprietary entertainment system platform as a cash cow.

It will be interesting to see how that plays out as a commercial strategy, but personally I don't think consumers will accept it.

Just waiting for the "looks like you're trying to start your car during peak hours, this can be unlocked for a fee of $5 (8-hour time frame)"

Funnily enough I'm considering a RAV4 as my next car and the one thing that has been putting me off is the lack of AA/AC for pre-2023 models, so it has been great to see this is now available as an upgrade.  Presumably this is for all pre-2023 models with the older screen, not just 2019 ones?

I have a base-model 2021/22 RAV4 Hybrid and it came with AA/Carplay.

I find the inbuilt Navigation system hopeless and unintuitive. The good thing is, if I forget my phone for any reason it's there as a backup.

I don't know how I ever got on without Airplay to be honest. It just works.

Thanks for confirming - I thought it had only been introduced as standard in 2023.  I would never buy a car without AA and/or CarPlay and am planning to get a Rav4 in the next 12 months or so - the Hybrid ones seem to get very good reviews

Have a talk to  Toyota and see if you can get a RAV 4 Prime PHEV.

I've seen a few on Trademe and I like the idea but I'm not convinced the price premium is worth the petrol saving - I'd need to do the sums.  Will have to see what is around when I do the change

I have a really good use case for a PHEV, because my daily (3 per wk) commute is 75km return, so could do most of it on battery.  But if my petrol costs for a hybrid are ~$2-2.5k per year, any more than a $15k price premium for PHEV starts to look like too much

An alternative is the new mazda CX60 which is a PHEV. I didn't think the PHEV RAV4 was being sold in NZ, but maybe there are some being imported. But the mazda is being officially sold here.

Don't think I'd want to spend that much without going full BEV.  .  Looks nice though

Edited - thought it wasn't AWD

Hopefully they bring out some new smaller PHEV models that will hopefully be a lot cheaper too.

2023 comes with the new Toyota entertainment software and upgraded 12" touch screen that doesnt have the buttons on the side. Also added wireless car play but no wireless AA for some dumb reason. U.S.A got car play and wireless aa.

I also cannot get AA wireless to work with the Morotola MA1 or AAWireless dongle, it starts then just bails out.

Lack of buttons isn't often a good thing. Anything touch based without buttons usually requires people to look  rather than feel as they are driving. If ou look at Mazda, they have done away with a touch based screen, although the previous touch screens were locked ou when going above a certain speed. Instead you ave to use the dial and physical buttons.

Is that really much better though?  You still need to look at the screen as you turn the dial so that you can tell when to press the button to select the item.  And you probably can't scroll through tracks as quickly as you can by swiping the screen.  On the plus side, your hand is resting on the dial so isn't affected by bumps etc

My RAV has wheel-mounted buttons for most functions and the screen on the dash by the speedo gives me a really easy-to-read view of what I am interacting with while still being able to keep my eyes mostly on the road.

Sounds like a good arrangement.

OT, but how do you find the Rav4 generally?  Do you get good fuel efficiency with it being a Hybrid?  I currently do ~12000km per year at 7.5litre/100km in a hatchback.  Keen on moving to a slightly larger vehicle with AWD but hoping to not use more petrol

I have the 2016 Rav4 and, when I brought it 3 years ago I paid for upgraded maps. It was well worth the $300 (I think was a bit less). I find it really good to use, and as mentioned,d it integrates to the dash as well which I find really helpful. I have only just recently thought of upgrading the maps again. The process was not instant as they have to take a module out of the car, update it and put it back. Think was about half an hour to 45 minutes. Tried Andriod Auto once and hated it (was a few years and versions back now) so for me sticking with the inbuilt one and updating every few years is fine
