OT, but how do you find the Rav4 generally? Do you get good fuel efficiency with it being a Hybrid? I currently do ~12000km per year at 7.5litre/100km in a hatchback. Keen on moving to a slightly larger vehicle with AWD but hoping to not use more petrol

I love it.

Economical driving for an AWD large-ish vehicle.
I get around 6L/100KM and nearly all of my driving is in traffic around town.

I find the addition of the electric motors to the 2.5L ICE is great for adding some torque when overtaking etc. It feels almost as peppy as my old 2.5L T Petrol Volvo (without needing to own a petrol station).

On average, I am filling it up for around $100 (ish) and getting about 825km out of a tank.

Coincidentally this topic of nav upgrades and map updates has come up on another forum I visit.

Same car different markets, very different options for map updates. Ranging from relatively affordable updates in the US to none what so ever in NZ or Oz.

The lack of maps updates affects quite a few marques. Out of date maps rendering the inbuilt nav system useless or a least degraded. Incorrect speed limits being one major complaint.

I find it odd that you can't simply attach a mobile phone by USB and then use it to perform an OTA update.

It would be clever for the consumer, but I guess it would remove a source of income for the dealers.
Maybe if the cars were $1000 more expensive at the outset and had free OTA Nav/entertainment software updates in the first 3-5 years of life, that might make a difference?

Mazda certainly includes 3 years of map updates. Update is done to the supplied SD card (which holds your NAV licence and map data) from your computer.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Welcome to the Charlie Fox that is Android Auto. It was a significant reason why I went back to iPhone.

Its a third party workaround for what Toyota should have supported by default, hard to blame Android for that. Plugged in it works perfectly fine.

I honestly think manufacture offered sat nav will become a thing of the past.
Just provide a nice screen and let Apple and Android take care of the heavy lifting.

Perhaps, but when you consider a major mapping/nav provider is owned by vehicle manufacturers there is obviously an intention by vehicle manufacturers to play in the nav market.

I’ve used many a inbuilt Satnav within vehicles,

nothing actually compares to using an external unit like a Navman or Garmin,

my current Navman….it’s simple and easy. Shows me time to go, speed and all the good stuff on a wee screen I mount just next to the rear view mirror when needed.

actually, I don’t really need it for navigation….I use it more for time and speed.

when I do need it for navigating….I’ve already got a fair Idea about where I’m going anyway…… (I guess that’s from using a map book in my late teens before sat navs became a thing)

side topic….it’s so amusing to see people rely 110% on Satnavs, Instead of reading road signs to aid them……you know those people who are fiercely looking at their screens to see which turn on the roundabout to use….slowing down 200m before a turn because they simply can’t work out what’s going on…or judge distance.

Topic for another day….

YMMV, but with the in built sat nav in one of my cars (which is typical of most recent cars) trumps external units in many ways. Sure external ones, like you have on your phone will have live traffic updates which can be very handy however what ever device you use you need a data connection for traffic

Overall I certainly don't rate external ones as being better. The inbuilt ones certainly have all the features of a Navman or Garmin.

side topic….it’s so amusing to see people rely 110% on Satnavs, Instead of reading road signs to aid them……you know those people who are fiercely looking at their screens to see which turn on the roundabout to use….slowing down 200m before a turn because they simply can’t work out what’s going on…or judge distance.

I think most times it's more than just the sat nav. Some drivers cannot anticipate/judge distance as you mention and are totally disconnected with whats going on around them. The sat nav just makes it worse. As you say another topic altogether.

When we had our RAV4 Hybrid I used the phone for navigation until we received the free upgrade to Google and Apple Auto. The navigation system that came with the RAV4 in our experience was very poor.

I find I use google maps and the inbuilt maps about 50/50 with my Toyota unit. For those of you that have both Android and iOS both using the car, a good quality 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 cable works great for changing phones over, such as this:

Funnily enough, the $300 Toyota charged me for the install did include a rather nice braided three in one cable from Belkin 😂
