While there is a lot of confusing marketing around it, most mid-to-high range are capable of hitting over 100hz natively. But unless you are pairing it with hardware that actually drives more than 60hz, there is no real use for it.

I want to like TCL, but as others have said their software and support in general seems to be pretty lackluster. And since we can't even get the good budget models that the US has, its hard to find reviews and accurate specs. Samsung at least being a bigger and well-established brand have that going for them, and they make a sh!t-ton of panels as well.

Unfortunately at this end of the price range, you're not gonna have a lot of choice. Most will be cheap 60hz edge-lit panels. Believe what your eyes see, so if you liked the Samsung better in store, then go that way.

Personally if you are not in dire need to replace it, I'd wait a month or two until Labour Day or Black Friday specials in October/November respectively. Most of the TV pricing is ho-hum at the moment, so if you can wait until then, and even bring your budget up to $1500, you will walk away with a much better TV for your hard-earned dollars.

I have a TCL 65C2US .. it's great!

Picture quality is excellent, sound quality is excellent, Wife Acceptance Factor is very high.

I like that it's a very vanilla Android TV so app choice is quite broad, and if it's not available to install you can side load things in.

Another consideration to think about is the panel type - others here can give the true low-down on this, but I am still disappointed every time I use one of our TVs (an LG), which has really disappointing blacks, apparently not only due to it being side-lit (never again!) but it also being an IPS panel (the contrast won't be as good compared to VA panels, according to advice I received here).

That said, this page that discussed the differences between panel types suggests that VA panels are not so good for gaming due to higher response times.  A PriceSpy search suggests many Samsung panels are VA panels, so not sure if this would factor into your decision?

(Also, it's just a worthy reminder of being careful of generalising how a TV will look like in the home environment based on viewing in-store; not only are their settings specific to that environment, but the store's lighting will often be so much brighter than at home. This will mean it's well nigh impossible to spot things like terrible contrast/poor blacks.)

This becomes one of the bigger purchasing factors as you move up the chain, but I would argue it only matters past a certain price point.

TN doesn't seem to exist in the TV world anymore, you are primarily discriminating between IPS vs VA for LCD/LED TVs. IPS is fine if all you want to do is watch sports or other bright, colorful content in a brightly lit room with multiple different viewing points, but for movies, TV shows (GOT S8 E3 is an excellent example) and games that feature dark scenes, the higher contrast ratio of VA is better.

This is further accentuated by the lighting type: edge lit is fine for bright scenes, but makes dark scenes look grey or adds a blooming flashlight effect in bad implementations (I feel you Jonathan18 on that disappointing LG, fricken thing haunts me every day). Full array is better than edge-lit with or without local dimming.

So it comes down to how much dark scene performance/contrast ratio vs color accuracy and viewing angles you want. Personally after having an IPS edge-lit TV, I will only be buying a VA FALD or OLED next time since movies and games are important factors for me.

But again, this really only becomes a factor after a price point. At sub $1500, you are really only gonna get cheap edge-lit with no local dimming panels. I would still go with a VA panel where possible, but a higher quality IPS will be better than a crappy VA.

So I went with the Samsung 50 inch RU7100. So far it's pretty good. I mean it's a huge upgrade from my old tv anyway. I have run into one problem though. The PC I use is a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and I often output it to external screens using a mini-displayport to hdmi cable. So I connected that to the tv and for some reason it just comes up with no signal. I can connect the surface to the tv wirelessly but I need to use a cable to get rid of the input lag. Any ideas what might be the problem here? If this doesn't actually work it's a bit of a gamebreaker for me. :(

Get an active display port adapter, those passive cables are terrible at compatibility issues.

I dont think passive can do 4k either.

ok I have ordered another cable. I had been using that one fine but then it didn't work with the tv so I tried it with my monitor and it didn't seem to work there either so I guess it just died at a coincidental time. I've ordered one that says it supports 4k@60fps so hopefully that will be sufficient.

Planning to get a TV upgrade from my crappy Veon during NL massive sellout.

Considering LG SM8100, Sony x800g, and any samsung within that price range.

Any other good options?

The SM8100 is an IPS panel TV and LG's IPS panel TVs have had a terrible reputation. The Sony X8000G has an IPS panel too (except the 75"?) and Sony's IPS panel TVs have a reputation for particularly bad contrast. If you specifically want an IPS panel the Panasonic GX850 / GX880 is a good choice. Otherwise the Sony 55 and 65" X9500G is a good dark room LCD. The best TV for you depends on your budget and what you want to do with it.

what's the budget? all LEDs are not very good - I would buy the cheapest and biggest and save up for OLED or Samsung QLED

Any particular model with VA panel that I should be looking at? Sounds like both LG and Sony are not a great choice.

I've been looking at X9500G as well but prefer not to spend that much, hoping to see a substantial discount in coming sales.

Based on personal experience, I'd support the post above re quality of at least LG's IPS panels - every time I watch our LG TV I regret the purchase. Stay far, far away from them.

TBH, I preferred the 1080 LCD Panasonic model we had previously; unsure what panel type it had, but its contrast and backlighting were far superior - and, I've come to the conclusion those matters are more important to me than resolution. I'm at the point that, when we upgrade our plasma in the HT with an OLED, I'm thinking about putting in that old 1080 non-HDR plasma to replace the 4K HDR LG!

Depends on size you are after obviously, but most good VA Led tv's start over $2k. If you are not fussed about dark performance, you can get some half decent edge lit ones just over $2k, but really you want FALD for about as good as LEDs get.Samsung Q70 and upwards (q60 is still edge lit), Sony x950g, can't remember if there are many others. LG SM9000 and upwards is IPS but FALD, so mixed bag really.

If you are not in a hurry, TV prices will start a downward trajectory in the next couple of months from Black Friday, Christmas, Boxing day etc until they bottom out around April when the 2020 models will be released. I'm hoping the x950g will follow it's predecessor to around about 2.5k for the 65, less if you go for the 55.

I have a Samsung 6000 series 50" and have no complains. Everything is amazing. I had a TCL bottom of the range 65" and had only minor issues - hdr a bit strange, sound is more squeaky than a cheap throw-out mobile phone, interface very laggy (underpowered processors)
