lol

FYI this is a brand new model that arrived in the country only a couple of weeks ago.  The distributors have over 100 in stock.  Supply chain issues likely mean that when the stock is gone, restocks will be a wee while away.

@Dynamic

What is the part number for the Ryzen 7  model and who is the stockist for Christchurch and  price estimate

I was looking at the HP Envy 360 15" from PB tech but they now only have demo units for sale.  Just liked this particular one.

Looks like I will need to look at the Probook series

Thanks

Hi @qwertee

The R7 part number is 4V4U7PA and as of this morning there were 17 in stock at the distributor's warehouse in Auckland and no ETA on the next shipment.  You'll need to find a local retailer yourself but most small-medium computer stores should be able to get one for you.  Don't bother asking a major retailer as one-offs are just don't fit their business processes.  The 3 year on site service hardware warranty for this model is the same UK703E part code.

I don't know, $177k on a computer sounds like rich person pricing to me.

Excuse my ignorance, I've only ever bought direct from Dell but a friend asked me to find her something yesterday and the 455 G8 looks perfect.

Where do I buy one of these from ? A small local place rather than HP themselves ?

I’m looking for a new Windows laptop - for me, not my mum, but thought I’d ask on this thread rather than start yet another one. It’s for replacing a 5YO Spectre X360, but I don’t want to pay the kind of money HP wants for the equivalent model; we’re not even desperate to have touch or the 360 features. This laptop’s still going ok but I thought I’d start looking now to see if there are any good Boxing Day deals.

Looking for:

  • 16GB RAM (or at least upgradeable if only 8)
  • 512GB SSD (256 would be ok as coping with 128!)
  • charging via PD (must-have)
  • preferably AMD, eg 5 5600U or 5500U
  • robust build
  • decent battery life
  •  14” - 15.6”
  • under $2k, and ideally closer to $1500

Having read this thread, obviously the HP Pro 455 G8 seems to tick all the right boxes; doesn’t look to be particularly good deals on this at the moment though (potentially too new? Or business laptops don’t go on special as much?) And can someone who knows these things please confirm that this does do PD charging? This HP webpage says it does, but I’d like to be sure.)

Other models I’ve considered include the Acer Swift 3, which certainly offers value for money at $1415 but I’ve read many threads here on GZ suggesting people stay away from the brand; also take the point of consumer vs business computers.

Would there be any other models that people would suggest I look at, especially those that are a particularly good price at the moment?

Also, do I need to care about (a lack of) Thunderbolt 4 if intending to keep this laptop for a similar period of time 5+ years)?

Many thanks.

@jonathan18 how about throwing a little more RAM at the current laptop to give it another year or two's life if it is working well?  Start saving and see what the Black Friday spoecials are like in November 2022 or 2023.

Sure, that is a possible option, but the laptop has been playing up a bit recently - will do a clean install to see if that helps, but I ideally don’t want to be left without a working Windows laptop…

What are the Dell Vostros like? They have a Vostro 5510 down to $1509; similar specs to the HP Probook, but with an Intel i7:

Has anyone tried Asus’ ExpertBook laptops?

I’m looking at the following laptop to replace a pretty old HP Spectre 360, given we’ve now realised we’re keen on retaining the 360 design/touchscreen.

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKASU3402382B/ASUS-ExpertBook-B3-Flip-Laptop-14-FHD-Glossy-Touch#product-specs-anchor

Any thoughts on whether this would last ok as laptop for ‘standard’ usage (watching content, usual Office stuff, WFH via Citrix etc) for the next few years?

I had initially been looking at AMD-powered laptops, but it seems far easier to get two screens working off a Thunderbolt-equipped laptop.

Thanks for any advice.
