Most European tourists coming to NZ will likely have to get connected to Vodafone because how Europe mobile network are based at (GSM).

Though I believe (or recall) Telecom NZ also have set up a tourist service for them to use T3G devices in NZ on hire agreement.. how well is this or whether this is active or not, i'm not too sure.

My hunch is that Chris (WMF -- Windows Meta File?) would most likely be using GSM phone. and without investing too much money just to get connected to NZ's mobile network, i'd suggest use Vodafone Prepaid, even if it won't full using V3G(UTMS/WCDMA) data connection at least he doesn't have to invest big hardware cost etc.

Also, the other factor is, how long is Chris going to be in NZ, if it is for few months, then probably T3G is better options for connected to internet anywhere... or if Chris main concern is to stay in touch with his family in europe, then V3G can guarantee international SMS services (two-ways).

And if Chris has laptop, then if he gets into any major city, he can just get on to Starbucks or anywhere that support WiFi (for example, in Christchurch, Hoyts Riccarton has free WiFi for its cinema patrons)... and some motels offer free WiFi broadband, and some offer ethernet in rooms too...

so again, dependind on what Chris want to do.. there are a lot of options he can use. WiFi for internet while V3G/Vodafone for mobile communication to stay in touch with families in Europe etc...

Make sure if you want fast data in main centers, you have a 3G handset that will work on Vodas network here.

There is a post here about how to set up an imported phone for Vodafones data services. (Thanks to paradoxsm).

Do you still want to come to NZ after seeing the infighting and unrulyness between us telcogeeks?

(TelcoGeek = new phrase coined by me??)

VO = Voice
DA = Data

VODAfone do not ask e about the fone bit

Sorry, VodaFONE! I did know that really (we have them over here too!).

I'm actually emigrating to NZ. My other half and I will be probably be travelling round in a Camper Van for a bit before we settle down though. This means I don't mind investing in hardware but we're not leaving for a couple of months and I'd like to get an Orange M5000 when they come out over here. Perhaps I should just hang on until I get to NZ.

Yeah, probably hang on a bit longer and get the imate jasjar, as it will be customised to suit VodafoneNZ and you wont have any issues with imported phone on Vodafone NZ network...

Just make sure any device you purchase in the UK is unlocked before you leave. Any device purchased at a discounted price will be locked in the UK in some cases even phones you purchase at full price that are network branded (such as the V600's, K608's etc) may also be network locked.

Overall mobiles are quite a bit cheaper in the UK than NZ and the range is also a lot greater in the UK than NZ.

Will probably wait and get one in NZ. It's too much of a gamble for it not to work when I get there.

We haven't decided where to live yet. The idea is to have a good look round with the Camper and see where we like best before buying a house. We lived in NZ for 6 months a couple of years ago in Wellington and really enjoyed it but we are now thinking of either somewhere near Auckland (probably not in the city) or Christchurch.

I'm probably leaning more towards Christchurch as it's nearer to the slopes and I'll be able to get more snowboarding in! :)

Woohoo.. Chch is getting its attention! WMF come to the flat land and it get better coverage with most network too and also if you happen to live in the good 3/4 area of chch, you can get cable! LOL

Now i have an even better idea. If you want to live near the slopes move to DUNEDIN! We even have evdo coverage, if you drive 20mins out of the city to the airport, cant wait till we have it in the city i tell you.
Trust me after being everywhere in this country, there is no better city. Besides we need more geeks here as well and a Geekzone party would be much better than anything a bunch of poofters from auckland could throw.

Im running and hiding for a while now ;-)
