That's probably because most (if not all) the other power companies offer such a discount.

I've never heard of a discount being offered by a phone company for paying in advance. Electricity and phone services - are they really comparable in this way?

discount for payment in advance or late payment fee. makes no difference, the effect is exactly the same.

I really have no idea what the OP's rant is about. they aren't forcing you to take the offer. You rejected it, as is your right. so what is the problem?

If I offer you my car for $30k when you think it is worth only $20k then you are completely free to reject that offer if you want.

for some people, those who aren't planning on leaving Telecom, this is a pretty good deal. something for nothing. It's an especially good deal if you make lots of calls to the wairapa.

if you think you might change providers in the next year, then reject the deal. simple as that.

No problem at all buddy, it's just amusing watching this company stuff up time and time again.  No wonder the share price is sub $2.   You are one one who appears to be "ranting" right from your first post.  As for the discounts v penalities I think we have pretty much covered that one off.

I don't get why you think you've been so hard done by - and what has been "covered off" exactly?

Is this is some sort of initiation ceremony for a Wannabe Geek, or do you guys really not get it?

you were offered a product that you did not value.  you turned it down.

what's not to get?  It happens to me all the time.

Not entirely sure why it warranted a thread though.

farcus: I think everybody here is missing the point. What is with a $99 discon fee on a $60 product?

Just to clarify, the $99 disconnection fee was more than likely in relation to whatever base access/calling product he has, not the "free" $5 a month product he was being offered.

Sounds to me like a retention scheme, pretty standard all over the world so I have no idea why it should be considered "arrogant", the customer gets something extra free, the company makes that customer more "sticky" and unlikely to take their business elsewhere.

If you don't value the offer, you don't take it up, nobody loses.
If you value the offer and have no reason to think you are likely to leave in the next 12 months anyway, it's win-win.

Sadly I cant find it on the Telecom website, but I agree the $99 is more than likely related to Homeline, Anytime or Total Home package.

I am assuming you were asked to commit to one of those plans for another 12 months in return for a free product.

This is typical customer loyally offering for Telecom across all products, (See broadband and free wireless modem, XT and free mobile phone).

It should not have come across as arrogant and may have been poorly sold, phone them back and provide feedback on your feelings as they would not have intended to make you feel like that.

BTW the welcome to Geekzone ;)

..and all your threads are warranted aye...smacks of the same attitude I originally suggested.  However the thing is it hasn't stopped you posting on the topic, even if they have been the same analogies repeated.
