in CHCH... slow and sucks.

When is this getting fixed?
What specialised staff are assigned to this?
This clearly not a cache issue?
How long will this take?

Here is a thought (silly).... :)
Could it be a filter blocking Wikileak that is effecting us?

hello all,

there is a firefox extension called HTTPS everywhere that forces browsers to use the https version of major websites such as facebook, twitter etc.

https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere

It's often cited as a method to protect yourself from script kiddies running firesheep or other http session-hijacking tools at public unencrypted wireless hotspots

The name is a misnomer, it only works if the other website is set up to deliver all its content over https and if the extension has a "rule" to cover it (i.e., not many).  Read the note on the website re facebook support if you go this way.

As an example, although I'm not a twitter user, I tried it using this extension and what was broken is now working.

Long term this is probably not going to do you any favours, it's better to use Telecom's cache where possible rather than fetching from overseas for obvious reasons, but I thought I'd throw it in the mix, it certainly does seem to add credence to the caching problem discussion.

On a completely unrelated note, for those Telecom employees watching in, any chance of an RSS feed on your status page?

cheers,
Stu

concrete: nope, wikileaks is alive and well here: wikileaks.ch  - It's not being "filtered"

The top level ".org" domain was taken offline by their host because they suffered an attack and claimed wikileaks were in breach of their T&Cs.   I bet the host had a lot of fun in their network ops centre that night :)

This is really annoying. Half the sites I go to just won't load at all.
I had an idea to use a proxy, but proxy.org won't load.
Is it possible to just disable the cache server?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I'm convinced this is not a cache issue but a more core problem at telecom.

I have a monitoring server which pings about 60 machines on various networks across NZ once every minute and also gathers SNMP info. Since Friday morning randomly these pings are timing out.

Now they cannot cache a simple echo request but it's been rubbish since about 7am on Friday.
See attachment - normal, normal, normal (for the last 20 odd days) then completely useless.

[Went to use your new report form and checked the others..seems its already been reported.

This
has been happening for the last week and is getting worse. Ive spent
hrs today going through every test including changing filters and
cables. After all this the Tech comes back and tells me that Telecom is
having problems with all international connections.. then she admitted
its national as well. Not impressed. So much for ADSL 2.

Im wondering whether they have added a new security filter and its creating havoc......

Have
resorted to using my laptop with Vodem stick which is normally slower..
yet its loading the pages 3 times faster.. both national and
international.

Thanks for the opportunity to vent.

SandyJ

Just got a ph call from Telecom..
changed my dns number. No difference. Seems its now a level one problem
with them as its affecting everyone. Duh..

He said, 'Please bear with us.. we are working on it'.
I said, thats going to cost you a weeks credit on my ph account.

This isnt helping me with my article deadlines.]

...

Apologies.. I didnt see this thread when I posted this in the new Faults section.
This problem started for me here (CHCH) last Thursday and I spent all day Friday cleaning my Mac and installing updates etc. No joy. Saturday morning I reported the problem.. Sunday I spent tearing my hair out and finally had to walk away from it. Finally dragged out the laptop and hooked up the Vodafone stick. It works fine and at least I can work now.

This morning the desktop is worse again so I get onto Telecom at 9am and spend 4 frustrating hrs going through every check that exists while trying to tell her it wasnt me.. Changing filters.. jacks.. replacing cables. (lucky I carry spares) At midday she rings me back for the 10th time and tells me she cant figure it out and is getting a Tech to ring me. She then informed me that there appeared to be a Telecom fault. 4.30pm a Tech rings me and we change the DNS number.. and on some sites that made it worse yet others are improved. This is not an intermittent fault for me..its constant. I actually asked him if Telecom had installed a new security filter and it was screwing things up.. he didnt reply.

The reason Im not impressed? Because since last Saturday I have been led to believe it was my computer that was at fault. Surely someone could have told the Overseas Techs before today. They must be as frustrated as we are.

Have been monitoring my speeds since last Thursday and everything is fine. Its stayed a constant 23ms with download @ 4.93 and upload averaging @ .7. Thats when I started thinking it wasnt me at all.. that it had to be Telecom.

It's interesting you mention speed and your ping results. Because that's one thing that has changed, albeit very subtly.

You see over the past 30 days of my monitoring results, most customers have been varying their response times by 25-35ms and since the problem appeared late last week, these response times (when we manage to get one back!) have been much more consistent. As in a variation of only 5ms.

I can totally understand your frustration when calling these people and they get you do to the most basic troubleshooting when they are fully aware of a problem.

Go to samair.ru for proxys but only use codeen proxys they are safest IMO although they are a little slow only use them on sites that wont work normally.

I don't often have issues with bandwidth on Telecom Pro. When there is, they stick out like a sore thumb..

There definitely appears to be issues lately connecting to international sites.. Slow loads I can handle.. but when sites dont load at all, something is wrong.. Nothing wrong my end.
