johnr: ISPs own the network elements your modem is connected to so they have every right how things work.

Add to that there's an operationally significant reason (not connected with the so called '3 strikes law') for more presistent IP addressing and you have an utter non story here.

Spamming? Hacking people's game accounts? Those are the only lines of work I can think of that would be likely to cause such a thing.

Nope. Freelancing in a International competitive market. Yes, It does happen. If people from Russia, China, India think you are coming on to their client base they will resort to such tactics.

Freelancing what?

How are your competitors getting access to your IP address?

Get off topic but yes. I am trying to save to move to China where the speeds allow you to surf via private VPNs so censorship is void. Plus capitalism (Not implying China is capitalist) is a utter fail.

then hide behind some anonymizing vpn when you deal with those types, and do your gaming and regular stuff on the static ip without fear

Moved to correct forum. Fixed spelling.

OP breaches 'soapbox' clause in FUG but I want to see other users' comments.

Competitive in those countries? Sounds like spam or SEO snake oil...

POS systems, web development lots of things. They get your IP by simpley messaging you "Hi I am interested in your services can you give me some feedback on my current site *link*"

you're against capitalism, but you freelance in an international competitive market and you're worried about people stealing your business?

A man has to eat. You have to play the game if you are in the system. Lets be realistic here.

China is capitalist, very much so.  It is also run by the communist National Party, but communist in name only.

Yeah that was a typo. I was saying I wasn't implying it isn't.

I don't think we should feed trolls and paranoid retards.

1: There are plenty of NZ ISP's that use still dynamically assigned ip addresses, change ISP

2: Chinese and Russian internet is about 1000x more censored than NZ. The only form of internet censorship in NZ is an opt in blacklist of child pron, some ISP's use it some don't.

3: The 3 strikes law is not internet censorship it's enforcement of civil law (copyright), copyright law has existed for hundreds of years.  The internet is a disruptive technological change it will take awhile for laws, customs and business models to adapt.

I agree there are some aspects of the new law that need serious improvement but "boo hoo I might get caught downloading movies/music/tv episodes from public bit torrent trackers" it is in no way comparable to the types of political censorship that goes on in DPK and China.
