timmmay: Why would you fault check the PCs when the router traffic meter and Vodafone traffic meter don't agree?

My assumption is there's a bunch of traffic hitting the modem for some reason that isn't getting to the router, but I'm not any kind of a networking expert.

You would check them for a virus / malware to make sure this is not causing extra traffic

How would this traffic get counted on the Vodafone usage checker without being counted by the routers usage counter?

Router could be faulty or the data interpreted incorrectly by end user. Not saying that is the case but it is how it could.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

Does the router know the billing date?

These devices typically have no way of monitoring firewall traffic that they're blocking. They only count traffic that is passed through the router.

Guys I'm not trying to be a pita, I'm just trying to understand your logic. I'm not a network guy, interested to learn more.

Billing date could be significant. I already mentioned stuff hitting the modem but not the router, but stuff the firewall blocks may not be counted too.

akojev: Hi there

I've been experiencing a similar issue on Vodafone naked ADSL in central Auckland for the past three weeks or so. The Vodafone traffic counter significantly over-reports our data usage.

Our router has its own traffic meter functionality. Compared to this, the Vodafone traffic counter is over-reporting by 2-3 times. For example, yesterday's usage according to the router was 1351MB, while Vodafone reports 4534MB.

According to Vodafone, we are on track to use about 150GB this month. We normally use 40-50GBs.

The router is the only device configured to connect to our Vodafone account.

I've logged a support call with the Vodafone service desk.

Is it upload or download? Usage meter should tell you.

Hi Akojev, I've asked our Faulting team to chase your ticket so we can get an update on this. Apologies for the delay in getting back, hopefully we'll have a response for you soon. I'll touch base with you next week.

As far as the overage goes, I wouldn't worry about that at the moment - we can sort something out once we've found the problem.

Cheers,

akojev

Thanks for your messages folks

Really impressed with Dylan from Vodafone getting in touch. He explained the culprit may be the fact we sold our Vodafone modem to somebody else while it is still associated with our account. (I did reset the account credentials on it, but apparently that may not be enough, as these modems ship registered to your account and can pull your credentials from VF during initial setup.) We've gone and requested to get it off the account on Friday, however still seeing no sign of improvement. I'll await confirmation from Vodafone that the modem has been disassociated.

As far as troubleshooting, we've done deep scans with up-to-date antivirus software on all machines. I would have thought any traffic that reaches the machines would be counted by the router either way. The router's firewall is enabled, so I guess it is theoretically possible a whole bunch of traffic is being denied by it, but counted by VF (though I think this is unlikely because we don't use P2P apps, host anything and we do have a dynamic IP address).

And yes, the router's traffic counter is in sync with the billing date/time.

Update - our issue is resolved. Dylan from Vodafone confirmed our old VF modem has been disassociated from our account and he's reset our password. He then saw two modem trying to connect with the old password on different exchanges.

Since the password reset our router and VF traffic meter agree.

Thanks for your help folks, and sorry for hijacking the thread with what turned out to be a completely unrelated issue, OP :)
