have you done pings/tracert's to the ips that have been used in this thread to be sure you are not experiencing the same thing?

maybe do that and post the results as it could actually be helpful to the thread if yours is showing lower pings, instead of your single line cryptic posts.

both telecom and telstraclear have historically had kind of bad routing to australia in general.

when vodafone took over telstraclear they seemed to fix google.  but prior to that the performance even to google was terrible.

pretty much all the medium isp's are peering freely in australia.  but australia has politics too.  even with cellphone networks who you'd think would use good carriers, it was better for an international call from japan than from australia.

that said, game servers tend to both peer, and be in sydney, which tends to maximise speeds to anyone who co-operates.

also serversaustralia are huge.  they really should be peering in new zealand.

It'd be nice but that would involve serversaustralia buying capacity across the tasman to reach New Zealand users.

This is the ISPs job.

Thank you for the invitation, however in light of the attitudes displayed in this thread I am not prepared to use the energy or my time so therefore decline your invitation.

KiwiNZ:
dbs: chevrolux, the way HFC is going lately. You might want to scratch it off your want list.

I am on HFC 100/10, there is nothing wrong with it. I am consistently at the maximum possible for my contracted plan with only the odd occasion it drops down.

As you see, the good thing about people posting is that actual faults are identified and corrective action can be taken.

Just because it works for your specific use-case it doesn't mean it works for the other 200,000 users.

Thanks a bunch John.
I'm guessing that this is something that I should bother customer service with instead. But as a side note, since yesterday afternoon we've been getting ~8.33 mbps down ~10.07 mbps up to the Voda Christchurch speedtest server (plus slow to others) and buffering Youtube, Play music, etc. Living in Wellington BTW.

I knew there was going to be shaping, but does Vodafone do throttling? Two tests were isolated with bad results too.

Cheers.

Slow Cable (HFC) should be logged as a fault via customer service, Please only test to local speedtest server and not over WiFi

I was merely pointing out the opposite, that just because it does not work for some does not mean that it does not work for all which was the premise of the post I originally replied to.
I guess post only pointing out how bad Vodafone is are permitted. * Shakes his head in despair and departs the thread*

Nope. Posts pointing out about a problem would be better served if other people with the same problem can post their experiences. Just saying "it works for me" then attracts lots of comments that just cloud the issue - off topic, not helpful.

To be fair, for accurate diagnostics you need to know where it works and where it doesn't.  So knowing where it does work is not a bad thing.  The bad thing is the speed that people get their panties in a bunch.  If instead of getting bunched up they'd said "oh guess it's just a problem on the TCL side then", rather than "[s]he's saying that I'm wrong" we wouldn't have had silly arguments in this thread.

I don't mind saying where it works - but the thread went on an off topic rant from all sides about the network quality as a service indicator instead, which doesn't help keeping things in focus.

but we dont know it works for him all hes said is hes getting the maximum possible for his contraceted plan, which means speed, not latency, which is what people in this thread are talking about and he has in his mind contributed to this thread and helped things.

help would be seeing if the issues mentioned actually exist on his connection, which i imagine they do, but we will never know because he has no time to because he knows better.
