Anyway, thanks for your reply, and I'll hazzard a direct question.

If am pinging my default gateway, what sort of numbers would you call "good" or "normal"?

typically, I get below 20ms and when the system seems to be running optimally, I'm getting close to 10ms (and sometimes under)

There are times when the pings go all over the place, (eg spikes into the many hundreds;thousands or even a complete timeout)

What would you associate that with?  ie. is this a manifestation of ARP flooding or something else (eg congestion)

But I'll understand if you feel you can't be specific or even answer the questions.

It can vary depending on the OS you have (not windows if you're seeing 20ms to the gateway :) ) anything over ~60ms and there's probably "a network event" occuring that we're usually pretty quick to find and fix.

doppleganger: I think alot of the confusion about the whole contention ratios comes from Glassmans comments about the TCL node size in Wellington and that there's one cmts per node... Which would be an issue if TCL had 100% penetration... Just because a node has 2000 homes in it (and I'm neither confirming nor denying that, call it a number for a theoretical discussion :P ) it doesn't mean all of those houses have cable.

To put it plainly: the number of households in a 'node' isn't at all the same thing as the number of modems on a CMTS.

There might be many 'nodes' assigned to one CMTS, there might be many CMTS assigned to one node.

On a piece of coax in an HFC (hybrid fibre coax) cable network, modern industry standard practice would be around 500 households passed (HHP), This comes from the electrical characteristics of the coax---the signal loss, number of amps required, target signal to noise ratio etc.. At the point where fibre-optic turns into coax, a standard design is to feed up to four coax legs off one fibre. On that basis, 2000 HHP per 'node' would be a normal standard cable build, but that's nothing to do with the number of cable modems per CMTS.

Note also households passed. The electrical design allows for 100% connection, but in practice there will be far fewer than that. Again, this doesn't tell you anything whatsoever about the number of modems per CMTS.

Thanks.

In fact I am running Windows:  Vista Ultimate 64 bit, on fairly hi spec hardware -Core 2 @ 3ghz+ (with gigabit lan).

And I'm not kidding.  When things are running well, I'm get continuous pings close to 10ms and sometimes even lower (I've seen the occassional 8-9ms).

In part that's what made this so frustrating.  I went from an awesome connection where I was able to host full rooms (better than all my Aussie friends) to being constantly dropped from every game I joined.

But as you have implied, things are definately looking up :-)

update:  Just ran the ping test on my partners low-spec laptop running XP home:

Here's what I got:

Without being able to compare with anyone elses results it is hard to say, but my suspicion is that these are great numbers.  The o/s I'm running the tests within doesn't seem to matter much, as far as I can tell.

I get the same sorts of pings to my default gateway (when I'm lucky) in Khandallah (203.97.214.1). Strangely, I get the same to YOUR gateway (and the path is also one hop...) - I assume this is just aliasing trickery or something?

While I'm here, I guess I should add that I've got a bad connection like everyone else in Wellington at the moment (timeouts, etc).

doppleganger: Just wanted to let people know we're making good progress on dealing to the ARP issue on the cable network.

/snip:
Following on from that we're aiming to do the pilot CMTS in Wellington on Thursday morning next week (24/07) and Wellingtons mass migration on the following Tuesday (29/7).

Any know if this actually happened?
I noticed on the Telstra site it mentions that a short outage was scheduled for yesterday morning in the Karori area,
was that outage the Pilot and if it was how did it go?

And is this still on track for the mass migration next Tuesday?

Hanging out for a solution to the drop outs..

Ralphski (I assume another insider from Telstra) has since claimed (in another thread) that we can expect to see the fix rolled out end of next month "all going well"

So the wait continues.

Having said that, I have to acknowledge that in my case, there has been a noticeable improvement over the last week or so.  I can't help but feel that some level of tuning/upgrade mave have occured on the Wainui node.  There have been a few problems, but nothing like the sort of constant drops I was getting before that.

I dont think Ralphski is from Telstra, I think he was just going on what was stated some time ago. Unless we hear otherwise from dopplegranger I think we can take it that the change will be happening this/next week.

Be nice if you could confirm doppleganger?

Yup, we migrated one of the karori cmts to the vlan segmented architecture. As it happens as we were finishing up I noticed a 10Kpps arp storm on the network and we managed to get a packet capture from behing the migrated cmts before knocking it on the head:

Rest of network: 10Kpps of arp
Migrated CMTS: 3pps of arp.

We're on track to complete the Wellington mass migration next Tuesday.

Awesome news.

Would there be any particular reason why I've been seeing improved stability over the last couple of weeks (on the Wainui node?) -given the ARP issue is still present?

Well until confirmed we cant be sure but judging by the massive decrease in flashing coming from my cable modem this morning the segmentation has been done or at least on my node in WainuiCool

Slightly off topic,  but I wish I could see the less-flashy light too... my street in Wainui has been without power since approx 7am this morning.. looks like power still out too.. *sigh*.

Yes, my activity light is flashing much less...quite erratic now

My modem signal levels are...
Downstream

Power Level 5 dbmV

Upstream

Sorry, dumb question -how did you acquire these stats?!?

Zolly -power out?  Due to weather or was it a planned outage?  (We went down a week or so ago for a few hours)
