gingereejit: Much more stable in Kilbirnie, not drop outs tonight.

4Mbs/2Mbs to WorldXChange
4Mbs/2Mbs to Airnet

but only

1.1Mbs/200kbps to Citylink

What's that about?

Lack of peering. TCL don't connect directly to Citylink so traffic takes a longer route.

lchiu7: Not in Khandallah yet - activity light on continuously

On continuously is good not bad... strobing is bad. It works that traffic is shown by the led going out. If there was no traffic at all then the led would stay on all the time.

I tell a lie. The activity light is now flashing only briefly. More interestingly, when I look at the traffic on the network with Peerguardian, prior to this update, the IP addresses would be continuously scrolling. Now it's almost static when there is no traffic originating from me.  Great stuff.

Well, over the next couple of weeks, it would be great if people who have previously been having issues report back as to whether or not the ARP fix has made a noticeable improvement.  Initial responses seem very good, but I think we need longer to properly guage the impact.

For myself, I was unpleasently surprised when I suffered a complete room-drop (while hosting) last night.  But it only happened once, so I cannot read much into it.  Certainly, I'm still very optimistic that going forward, I will be enjoying a much more stable connection -but I guess we will see.

ps.  I think it is very worth keeping in mind that as users/consumers, our knowledge of the underlying issues with TCL's cable network are still rather limited -and that folks like Dopp can only tell us so much.

It is just my personal suspicion that there are other issues at play, beyond the ARP one (in fact Dopp acknowledged this, stating the ARP issue was the "main" one) and it could well be that further work is still required before the network can get a proper clean bill of health.

However, I will acknowledge that they have taken a massive step forward with this fix -Well done TCL.

I did a continuous ping test to my gateway last night and didn't get any timeouts over a period of an hour. I did the same test several times last week and was getting several dropouts every few minutes. I'm in Strathmore Park but not sure if the good results last night were a one-off or whether the network has been fixed up in my area.

What's really peeved me off the most though, is after 3 - 4 weeks of essentially unusuable internet in the evenings and weekends. Whenever I did finally make it to TCL website it would show 'Network Status: No known issues'.

How you can call an network infrastructure on the verge of collapse because of flooding ARP requeuts, with people's network connections dropping out or constant timeouts as 'No known issues'  - I don't know.

I had no interest in sitting waiting for hours on end to get a customer support person to tell me it was a issue with my pc/wireless router and not the TCL network/modem.

If I hadn't come here I would have been none the wiser.

Well only a short time so far but since the ARP traffic on my segment (Khandallah) has been reduced dramatically I have removed my Linksys router with the patched firmware and put back my D-Link DI-784. So far (2 days) no dropouts or microoutages that used to plague me all the time. So something is working better than before.

The ARP fix will probably make a big difference for routers that were being screwed by the traffic, and it may also have helped improve throughput during busy times.

However, I've STILL had a few room drops while hosting -and I've noted a couple of occassions where I've had high (eg in the thousands) ping responses from the gateway.

So I can't say this has been a complete fix, but it does seem to have made an impovement.

I'm very interested to hear what other gamers are experiencing.

For me complete fix. Internet has returned to what it was a year ago. ie fast and constant.

Will play some COD4 tonight just to confirm but was on GTR2 over the weekend and that was fine.

Since no one has said officially that the ARP segmentation has been completed for
the Kapiti Coast and I hate to assume that is has..

but I had no issues i.e. lagspikes or disconnects in the weekend, time will tell if
it stays this way or if it was just a oncer for any number reasons.

I did a ping to the gateway sunday afternoon and in the past it has returned the
occasional "Request timed out" or spiked up to 300 - 400ms but over the time I ran
it I think the highest return was mid 40's which is good, generally it returned 18 - 25ms.

Yes it was completed for all Wellington (including Kapiti) nodes last Tuesday night.

There has been one problem since about that time and I don't know if it was/is related to the VLAN segmentation fix. That one problem has been on-going and I believe some customers would have had a lack of internet, possibly several times over the last few days. I don't know which customers of if it was limited to any one specific area. I believe the problem has either been fixed or at least worked around.

Perhaps when doppleganger shows up he might know more. It may be that he was working on the issue for the last few days & nights which might explain his absence here.

Other than that issue, there seems to have been mostly very noticable improvements in most areas. My home cable-modem has not needed resetting for almost a week now.... it was about a daily occurence prior to that.

Not sure wht is happening tonight, but its currently 7.45pm and all international traffic is at dialup speeds. tested using speedtest.net.
Warcraft is running at a latency of 1230ms.

Once again peak hour and unuseable.

That was testing to both Australia and LA.

It was was operating until approx 5.30pm OK.
Put in a call to help desk and was told wait time is 73 minutes LOL
