One NZ are keeping their 2g network so you’ll be fine for calling and texting.
- just good luck using data. Side note: I hope their 4G network improves in the Wairarapa - my phone was forever sitting on 3G - to have it fall back to 2g would be the pits!

One NZ are switching off 2G roughly one year after they switch off 3G, so 2025.

stevenn:

just south of the Hillsborough hall

Lots of VDSL and ADSL coverage in that area and if not, Primo Broadband probably has coverage
Wifi Calling is a solution

Looks like one NZ has pushed out the shutdown till end of next year for 2G and a few months into next year for 3G.

Well that's a relief for those that still use telco calling on old phones, but they cant keep kicking the can down the road forever. Perhaps they need to start putting something on the outgoing calls on non volte devices telling them of this upcoming disconnection.

The reasons given were to allow people more time to upgrade, including IoT. I think more likely is they don’t have a chance to have the 4G /5G upgrades completed in time.

Linux: @stevenn first off do you have broadband at home? If yes then WiFi calling will make sure you stay connected for Voice calls, SMS etc...

4G coverage is artificially shrunk at the moment so when 3G shutdown happens they will be able to remove this

Thats good to hear - So effectively they lower the power of 4G so as not to interfere with 3G or something?

One other question I have for someone obviously in the know.

My understanding is the ONE NZ and 2D share radios/towers now so how will that work when One NZ shuts off 3G but 2D continue to offer it??

This has been well times as I was thinking about the 3G shutdown while driving to Methven for the weekend and noticing that we only ever got 3G signals on very current phones (Iphone 15 Pro) as I was starting to wonder if it was an Urban only thing or something.

@mobiusnz  2degrees & OneNZ have a MoRAN sharing agreement on a small number of sites which is very different from the old national roaming

4G coverage was artificially shrunk cause of voice calling over 3G and if 4G coverage was better then handsets with out VoLTE could not make voice calls and confuse customers

Lots will change before the 3G shutdown on the mobile mobile networks

Ahhh - I was led to believe (or completely misinterpreted what was said which is likely) that MoRAN sharing was global with 2D and Voda. So its still a mixed bag of 2D having their own radios etc and some MoRAN.

Sounds like we should see some network improvements then :)

I got this too, but my phone supports 4G and VoLTE so it should be all good for me too 👍

I have no idea which one they were sending that in relation to. They could have put that information in the email as I have several seperate connections with them. I suppose I could dig thru the message and see what address it was sent to and work it out myself. Probably my ancient xiaomi one that I can enable volte in the menu but it then breaks sms on it so I leave it off. That is my calling phone because it isn't afflicted with the google dialer on it that is hostile to call recording.
