BrentR: Running a company on prepay sounds far from fun.

Actually I think 2degrees prepay is pretty much close to postpay for most small to medium enterprises in NZ....

1. There is auto monthly topup?

Ahhh good point, I forgot about the auto topup.

If you watched Target last week, even Paul Brislen admits that Vodafone has "just become in competent"!

damianf: how's that for a Freudian slip?

It's not a Freudian slip at all.  A Freudian slip is when you say one thing but you mean my mother...Laughing

All joking aside, it's a shame that when companies grow so large within a domestic market they lose sight of why they're there in the first place.  It'll be interesting to see what 2Degrees are like 10+ years down the track...

Now that NZ finally has a competitive market in the mobile market; I would see them having around 20% share, there is a lot of resistance to change, for example I just bought my GF a phone but shes to lazy to change even though its brand new and will save her money. People like this is what will hold 2degrees up.

Ham: Yeah I dont see myself signing up for 2 years again.. Plus I have no idea how I'll use my phone in 2 years, text might be outdated by then with instant messaging the way things are going

+1 - I signed up for a 24 month contract with Vodafone to get a good price on an HTC Magic. I'm 10 months in and I sold that phone on TradeMe two months ago for $80 less than I paid for it. But I still have 14 months to run on the contract.

The reality is, I use about 10 minutes / month on out-going calls. Most of my comms are via txt and email....and i do that through my phone.

My data usage on the phone is about 1.5GB / month....and with the 3GB rolling promo on Smart80 accounts I pay no more for it than the 250MB quota included.

Most of my phone use is now data. Strongly so.

This makes me unlikely to re-sign for a term contract. I don't see myself leaving Vodafone, but I won't be chained to them either. The economics of a term contract just don't stack up for me.

I'm very against contracts, the most recent one I took was December 2006, for 12 months - who knows what your usage will look like in a year's time?

As for the handset subsidy, I'd rather buy my own handset outright, then I'm on a term of 0 months :)

horses for course really. some people like the subsidy you get with the contract, some people prefer the freedom to switch. whatever floats your boat. as long as both options are available then no one can really complain.

Just pick whichever suits you best

Fine if you do get a subsidy. When I wanted to change my plan earlier this year I was going to have to sign up for a contract with no subsidy or other benefit. I had changed provider by smoko time.

Correct - however vodafone don't offer the freedom to switch - i.e. no open term contracts.

Yes and it was very nice for him to front up ON THAT ISSUE. You have taken that so out of context....no wounder so many companies would simply say "no comment"

Bingo - I was a VF customer since the BellSouth days right up until they started their VF/VF minutes only plans. I'm leaving telecom for 2 degrees as soon as the bigtime debacle is put to bed.

Having no plan options without a contract is the killer for me- besides the lack of value for money in any of their plans.

Update team - having run on 2degrees for two days now I'm very happy. It's amazing how snappy EDGE is compared to Voda 3G - only noticeably slower in a couple of traffic-heavy applications.

And not a single dropped call!  I gave up ringing the Vodafone help desk about my dropped calls - they kept telling me it was my handset that was at fault.

Funny how a 2degrees SIM fixed my handset too!

Good on you damianf!

As another longtime Vodafone customer I am contemplating joining you.

I have grown tired of hearing from Paul that there is something fantastic coming 'soooooooooooooon'

YEAH RIGHT!
