Thanks. I was curious because my own iPhone has a volte button that you have to switch on. Hers does not have that button. Phone stayed on 4G when making a call.

Where is the VoLTE setting on your phone? I have a 16 Pro but couldn't easily find the setting when I looked in the 'mobile' section.

Older iPhone went Settings -mobile -mobile data options - voice and data - volte button.  This is the phone I was thinking of which had 3G, 4G and volte button options

My newer iPhone has three options when you get to voice and data options are 5G auto, 5G On and 4G so no actual volte button.

Correct on the newer iPhones there is no way to turn off VoLTE

Call me cynical, but maybe Spark’s approach to turn off their 3G network 3 months after the other 2 is is to grab customers who get stuck, port them over, then convert them to new devices by the end of March?

Linux:

@quickymart If your handset is not using VoLTE for some calls then it is not in 4G coverage or it would always use VoLTE

I don't think that's it, because where I am gets good 4G coverage.

Of note though, when this happens I'm usually in range of my home wifi, so I wonder if that's a factor? (Note that I don't use/activate Wifi calling though).

@quickymart If you don't have Wi-Fi calling enabled then it is not related Are you using a Samsung handset with recently updated One UI7.0?

Why do you think the calls are not going over VoLTE?

Because the VoLTE indicator disappears but the wifi indicator is still there. Having said that, as I'm writing this the VoLTE indicator is visible.

I'm running One UI 5.1.

Next time it happens I'll get a screenshot.

@quickymart Does the 4G icon change to 3G during those calls?

No, that doesn't happen, which is what puzzles me. Nor does the wifi calling icon appear.

As I say, I'll get a screenshot next time it happens.

So then it is a VoLTE call. You have made it clear WiFi calling is disabled and the 4G icon remains showing

Only leaves 1 option = VoLTE calling

If you are worried about VoLTE there are two ways to be 100% sure

  • FREE Hotspot your phone to your laptop, get a constant ping -t running to say 8.8.8.8 call your mobile from another phone, if there is a drop of a few pings your phone is falling back to 3g to setup the call
  • PAID BUT BETTER Download an app call iTest Available on Google Play and the App Store costs a few bucks and will 100% confirm VoLTE support
