Cylon: With a GENIUS? modem you cant configure stuff all~

YOU can't but Orcon can.

Like everyone else said, this is a mixture of potentially a bad DSL line and poor configuration.

I also wonder if you have logged any faults with Orcon to get it fixed? If their VoIP platform is, supposedly, so terrible why is anyone with them?

Logged 2 many to count,  fixes were allways temporary, I have the modem on a timer so it reboots each day, otherwise my sync speed will fall back from 11 to 7 it was 17 when  I first joined orcon.
Any online games are simply are unplayable with pings in the 300s. Guess I might be an x orcon if this does not improve as well

Can you PM your username?  This is not normal, it sounds like a fault with your ADSL line, either house wiring or between your house and the exchange.

Cylon: [snip]

Sorry folks voip sucks, after almost 2 years of problems we still had no usable phone after 7.30pm.

No, it doesn't suck. It's actually works incredibly well.

Clearly you have had way more than your share of issues, and that's frustrating, but don't write off the technology because of an issue your your specific setup.

Given it's a problem every evening, it sounds like a congestion issue, and your VoIP traffic is not being prioritised through.

EDIT: Spelling

Cylon: Anyone done this? I have had enuf of voip, to many faults and quality problems. Now with Orcon throttling my Unlimited plan. Its time to go backwards to a ph and net that actually works. Presents problems undoubtly, like do I keep my ph number, do I need to pay Telecom for a new connection, etc etc. ?Whats your take on this

This is interesting because I have heard simular stories before.

In one instant a customer was fed up with VOIP over fibre and wanted to go back to a normal phone.

The problem was that when they pulled the fibre cable through, they pulled it through using the existing copper, thereby replacing the copper with fibre. Problem is, They cannot pull another copper cable through as the ducting is too narrow. Customer needs to now dig a second trench if he wants to go back to copper LOL Beautiful!

Customers in my opinion need to be aware of things like this before opting to go for fibre. Always make sure the existing copper is left where it is. I suppose there is always a chance it may be used again.

If Orcon cannot supply a good VOIP service, a better alternative would be to simply change VOIP providers. But this may be easier said than done, especially if they have got you on some kind of contract.

Over UFB most ISP's would be delivering their VoIP offering over the high priority CIR. This means it's can't be affected by any saturation which can occur with xDSL since it's a best effort service (with the exception of EUBA plans that offer a CIR).

I will be signing up to fibre next month. I don't want any kind of phone line. Either VOIP or POTS. Does this mean that I need to go with an isp that offers naked ufb. Instead of one with included VOIP and not using the VOIP. Otherwise presumably bandwidth will be reserved for something that will never be needed.

There is no such thing as "naked UFB". Naked is a word used to describe a xDSL connection with POTS (and clothed is a connection with POTS). It's not really a term in the UFB world.

All UFB plans are created equal and include rental of the ONT ATA port. If your ISP choses not to use this port and/or use the RGW to deliver voice services it's totally up to them.

Bandwidth including EIR and CIR is the same no matter what product offering you take up. These are set according to the CFH product guidelines.

if you do not have a cir on your connection, you can not complain.

Thanks for that.

I was using "naked UFB" to refer to a UFB connection that does not have a RSP supplied VOIP service.

I want to use UFB for only internet. If I sign up with a RSP that doesn't have a "internet only" UFB plan. Will that mean that there will be a big chunk of the CIR bandwidth allocated to VOIP, which will then be off limits to internet use?

Another way of asking the same question: Will a "internet only" plan have faster download speeds, lower ping ect. Compared to a plan that has bundled VOIP? Assuming Backhaul, Network congestion, and all other factors are the same.

No. The CIR has nothing to do with the EIR.

The headline UFB speeds (30/50/100) are all EIR and have no throughput guarantee. If you're using the correct 802.1p tag you'll be able to use the high priority CIR queue.

It might pay to read up on the UFB specs if you want to know more, CFH, Chorus and all the LFC websites have details of exactly how things work.

This thread is why I enjoy reading Geekzone so much.

Original Poster: I'm fed up/frustrated with X and I want to use Y.

26 people: X is great! Nothing wrong with X! The problem will be A, B, C, D, E or if it's not that it might be F, G, H, I or maybe J or K. X is great! Check A->K!

4 People: *squabble about B, F and K for 4 posts*

Original Poster: Yea, so umm, how do I use Y?

For what it's worth, here's my advice OP.

Thanks for that... i particularly liked:

"Many sudden laptop shutdowns occur because of overheating. Submerge your laptop in a bucket of ice water every 10-15 minutes to prevent it from getting too hot."

*sigh* if only it were that easy!
