The End result as promised.

After a rescheduling of the change over from the 5th to the 12 march. I got my normal ph line back.
ABOSOLUTLEY AMAZING it works, sound quality is great. not used to that at all.


Next: get rid of damm genius modem not so bloody amazing.
after 3 days talking to various Orcon techs on help line, they nearly had me convinced my Dynalink RTA 1046VW was toast, it just refused to authorize my password on the their system.


 Thanks to geekzone I came upon this thread about changing the genius password to base64.
Works like a charm.  (I am not totaly stupid after all, you orcon genius techs)
Why didnt they just tell me ?

50% reduction in pingtimes 60% increase in speed, throw any genius modem you see in the recycle bin

Are you saying your sync rate has increased by 60%? I would find that almost unbelievable.

I'd find it quite believable if the original issue was perhaps mid-point injection.

Sure has, used to fall back  from 15 to 6 over a 3day period, thats why I had a reboot timer on the power supply

So it sounds like the problem here was nothing to do with VoIP, it was potentially a midpoint injection issue affecting your connection. Removing a POTS line can't change your connection speed. Maybe Orcon could confirm this.

Your VoIP would now work fine if you connection has been sorted. If you'd given a few more details emphasising what was actually wrong with your connection you would have received different advice from people on here, as VoIP itself was not the problem.

Sorry,  but I just dont care for what the exact Orcon/Chorus system problem was, I dont need to know, I have no access to corrective action for it. My connection works now and thats not much to ask for is it. I feel sorry also for those who are not so computer literate, with problems and without any abilty to influence the outcome at all. They are stuck with a crap connection, forever.
End of story, hope someone else can learn from my experience

No you shouldn't need to understand how your internet works - but the real world dictates you do need to understand some basics. Poor internal home phone wiring and poor WiFi performance are biggest cause of internet speed and performance related issues and both are completely beyond the control of your ISP.

Likewise midpoint injection was a very common issue, something I wrote about here. The impact of midpoint injection can vary and ultimately an end user understanding this problem and requesting a change back to a wholesale connection is the simplest way of resolving this. It's not necessarily in your ISPs interest to do this, because it costs them more to provide you with service. Migrating all customers who became cabinetised was also not necessarily an option for an ISP because many people were happy to receive substandard performance in return for cheaper pricing.

The above linked blog post describes exactly what happened to me. In BC times (before cabinet) I was getting just over 10mbit on speedtest.net - Orcon ULL, master filter, and 2Km from my house to the exchange as a guess. After the cabinet got installed speeds dropped to about 2.5mbit. Asked Orcon to move my connection to the cabinet, speeds went to 15mbit on speedtest.net
