sbiddle: No you shouldn't need to understand how your internet works - but the real world dictates you do need to understand some basics. Poor internal home phone wiring and poor WiFi performance are biggest cause of internet speed and performance related issues and both are completely beyond the control of your ISP.
Likewise midpoint injection was a very common issue, something I wrote about here. The impact of midpoint injection can vary and ultimately an end user understanding this problem and requesting a change back to a wholesale connection is the simplest way of resolving this. It's not necessarily in your ISPs interest to do this, because it costs them more to provide you with service. Migrating all customers who became cabinetised was also not necessarily an option for an ISP because many people were happy to receive substandard performance in return for cheaper pricing.
