Windows Mail: No mail client - so trying out Windows Live Mail. Problem is I have three email accounts, and the way WLM works I now have three inboxes in my email client. That's what I call unfriendly! Not entirely a W7 problem, but one that springs up because of it. 3rd party mail clients to be experimented with - Microsoft loses another application user.
Windows Explorer: Clunky interface which is both ugly and unfriendly. I am particularly frustrated by the way the folder I double-click on in the left-hand pane immediately scrolls to the bottom of the screen, hiding the folders/sub-folders below it. Hey - I double-click on a folder because I want to see what's in it, not because I want it to scroll away from me and hide stuff. Looks like a 3rd party File Manager is going to be required.
Search: I can no-longer right-click a folder and search just inside that folder. It's also no longer configurable on the fly - I can't open a search window and specify a particular folder or drive to search. 3rd party search engine?
Other: A few programs that I used to have no longer run, but I was expecting that as they're designed for 32 bit systems and I'm running the 64 bit version. Overall, I'm impressed with the speed of this (beta) OS and more than happy with the way most of my programs are running, but I am significantly underwhelmed by the removal of basic functions or the altering of them for no good reason - or is making them unfriendly and hard to use now regarded as a good reason?
I can see me making a significant move away from Microsoft products unless the basics get addressed.
PS - I still hate the ribbon bar which is now making an appearance throughout most MS products. Ugly, unconfigurable and everything is being placed in totally counter-intuitive locations. Good one.
