Half the country is made up of families who can't afford to shell out for a 3-5 year old ex-lease ($300-500?), especially when they already have a working computer...

Also most ex lease things lack power supply connections and sometimes physical space to put a graphics card in, so moving that over isnt going to happen and good luck running anything on a 3-5 year old intel integrated GPU.

Yes, it told me the processor was incompatible in the health check, where after the update it runs Win11 fine so far. It was one of the fastester processors at the time, and for most things you would not know it is 10 year old PC.

I can't remember the details now and I'm not a PC expert. I just did a lot of reading on how to do it and advise anyone else to do the same. Just some useful information -- I put Win 11 on my Intel Gen 6 Dell 7470 laptop (24 gig RAM, 1 TB disk, TPM 1.2) some time ago, and it updated fine to 24H2. Now I can add that when I did a complete reset on the machine to sell it, it immediately refreshed with 24H2 without a murmur. Not much to worry about, then, with the kludged update to Win 11.

I popped a m.2 drive that was failing but had what I thought was 10 on it into my old 4th gen i7, turns out it was 11, it booted and worked fine and the only thing that did not work was the pin to log in, had to use the account password. It then took some windows updates just fine and works great. Probably faster than the crapbox 8th gen celerons I bought to be supported.

No idea if it will take the next major update tho, so it will not be getting used. The hardware is fine and will be going into a box to be put in a case when I find another cheapie to screw around with linux or something.

I am wondering that if MS says it needs these minimum hardware features for the PC to be considered secure, why can you install linux on that same hardware and linux is considered to be secure. I am guessing there will be a lot of cheap PC hardware being sold soon that doesn't meet the standards. I have seen some already being sold on trademe where they have still managed to install windows 11 on it, even though the hardware doesn't officially support it, which isn't very good, because they may not get future updates..

No, officially, you need TMP V 2.0

What people here are talking about is bypassing the TMP requirement with Windows 11 and it working with hardware that doesn't meet Windows minimum requirements.
People are advising that the bypass is fine with their systems.

You could do that too; however, you will also need to bypass the requirement via one method or another... i.e reddit/google/youtube how.

Mircosoft has come out

Installing Windows 11 on a device that doesn't meet Windows 11 minimum system requirements isn't recommended. If Windows 11 is installed on ineligible hardware, your device won't receive support from Microsoft, and you should be comfortable assuming the risk of running into compatibility issues.

Devices that don't meet these system requirements might malfunction due to compatibility or other issues. Additionally, these devices aren't guaranteed to receive updates, including but not limited to security updates.

I guess if I make a single windows account for each computer, then that gets me syncing them to nothing else but the free extended support.

Looks like a bit of a complex solution to extend support for another year. but I guess it is worth it to get another year of usage from older hardware without too much work.

Yup

By the time October 2026 rolls around, it should be possible to get an inexpensive ex-lease desktop or laptop with a legitimate (i.e machine has a TPM-2.0) copy of Windows-11 installed. Even better, it almost certainly won't be "AI capable"! LOL

Only good if you have software that will run on it, and don’t have old windows software you need to run.
