I had read that even if she had been taking it without knowing. eg food being spiked, that she is still going to lose the medal, as it would still be an unfair advantage. People really don't know what happened, but the person is adamant that they weren't intentionally taking drugs, and sounds like they will fight it. There have been false positives in the the past for other drugs, and I think even a NZ athlete in the past has problems with false positives. I was surprised at how many people in this olympics have been caught with drugs in their systems, and they are just the ones which have been caught. It certainly has been kept quiet.

Just reading on Stuff that Valerie has another 7 competitions to take part in before she returns to NZ on October. Assuming these are international events, I wonder if the Belarussian will be taking part?
Have any bans been imposed on her at all at this stage?

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Testing for steroids in urine has advanced rapidly in the last few years, increasing the sensitivity of the test for methenolone acetate from a few days to a couple of weeks after the last use, however the instruments used are very expensive.

It's quite possible that she was tested by a run-of-the-mill national drug testing lab that was not following latest procedures and used the old analytical techniques, thus she underestimated the duration of the necessary withdrawal period before the Olympics.

When she appeared at London her samples were tested at a state-of-the-art laboratory ( GSK and Imperial College established it especially for Olympics ) which would use the much more sensitive and expensive tests.

Testing laboratories are required to measure/detect drugs and/or their metabolities down to specific detection limits, say 50 ppm to get approval as testing labs, but if their instruments can detect down to 50 ppb, they can report all concentrations above that as positives. For banned substances, the limits become the background concentrations.

Ask Alberto Contador ( cyclist ) - he got caught a couple of years ago because his samples were sent to a state-of-art testing laboratory in Germany, which had much more sensitive detection limits than many other European testing labs previously used.

Drug and performance enhancements are a big issue in sport. Kudos to London getting them and dealing with it. As I see it, VA fought hard and threw a gold medal throw. The Belarussian knew she would win gold, her test was being caught or not. Lifetime bans as the single punishment has to be the message.

The target has to be beating your competitors, not beating the drug testers

I'm prepared to accept the Belarussian didn't knowingly take the performance enhancement drugs. It's entirely plausible that her training team "spiked" her food.

As others have mentioned perhaps the testing in Balarus prior to the Olympics was substandard (I'm not suggesting any skulduggery with the testing). They were probably doing their own testing to make sure they weren't going to be caught out.

I don't think anyone would knowingly use these drugs and leave themselves open to getting caught. There is no sense in this. However with substandard testing they thought they were in the clear and got caught out by improved testing technology. One report stated that the Balarussian officials couldn't offer an explanation and weren't going to dispute the Olympic test results. That to me says something, they knew they'd been caught out.

Whether or not she took the drugs knowingly disqualification was the only option.

What ever the ceremony and no matter where it is, I hope the ceremony does Val proud. She deserves it.
