The company I used, on recommendation from here, was www.currencyonline.com

I
can recommend them, their support, and their service. Takes 2-4 days from memory.

I can, but the recipient charges a fee, the bank charges a fee and the bank rates are 2c per dollar more.

It's not easy to convert bitcoins into currency these days and I don't think a business would feel comfortable. I saw Bitcoin fluctuare from NZ$900 down to $750 and then back up to $1050 in a single day.

My daughter is studying in the US and of course I am paying here university fees :-(

All I do is get a bank draft in USD from my bank (BankDirect) and irrespective of the amount they charge $21 I think.

I then deposit that money into her account using an Android app from her bank which just has me photograph both sides of the cheque and deposit it electronically. The cheque is usually confirmed as having cleared the next day and there are no charges from the receiving bank. Well it is a credit union so perhaps they don't charge but it works pretty well.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

When you send an IMT (International Money Transfer) ask for the charges to be OUR instead of BEN. Doing this means you will incur all charges and the recipient will receive the full $5k.

All major NZ banks will allow you to open FCA's (Foreign Currency Accounts) so if you know your upcoming USD costs you can convert you NZD into USD when you feel the rate is good and keep the money in your USD account until it's time to pay.

For the sharpest rates from your bank avoid sending IMT's on weekends or after business hours.

a lot of american companies take AMEX without surcharges, and if its regular you can build up good membership rewards points :)

ASB bank lets you send $US (or other) even if you dont have a foreign currency account straight from internet banking.

Westpac will also let you fire an international money transfer (SWIFT) during business hours (they won't do it out of hours because there's no live exchange rate then).

You can also try American Express Fx International payments - I recall it being 1-2 days, sender incurs all costs (about $15 from memory), and the remote end it's simply deposited via a local intermediary so no receiving fees.

What are the fees for just walking into a Western Union and handing them the cash? I thought it would be ~$25 or so, wouldn't it?

Just beware that organisations that offer lower fees tend to have poorer exchange rates also.

For example Onesmart charges no fees for ATM usage overseas but when you buy say USD from your NZ wallet the rate is usually lower than their normal sell rate.

Interested to know where I might get an idea if the NZ/USD will get to 84-85c by the end of December, how does one get a feel for the likelihood of such a thing?
