I know someone who had a dyson which kept needing to be repaired. But they may have just got a bad one, or they may have improved them. The dyson ones certainly look very cool, and they are more designer. I played it safe with the miele, but it hasn't disappointed me, and mine is about 8 years old.

Bought a Bissel AirRAM from a friend dealer.  We had terrible trouble with cat hair and couldn't afford a dyson... My word what a difference it makes, removes all the cat hair and cleans really really well, weighs only 3KGs and is bagless.  Li-ion battery takes about 4 hours to charge to full but lasts around 45m to 1hr over a period of days.  Its great not to have to tow a cable around and it is very light.  Only downside so far is the lack of hose to clean high, but you could purchase a hand held unit to that.

Went and had a look around, other than spending $1699 for a Sebo which I can't justify, there aren't that many decent upgrades to consider. I think we will just replace the powerhead for the one we have and reconsider in a couple of years.

I talked to 3 companies today who sell a variety of brands, they are all pretty consistent that switching brands would be downgrading from a motor perspective though most said the plastics on a lot of the more expensive units are pretty average.

Depends who you speak to, some will be selling house brands where they make larger margins. The plastics on the miele are perhaps the best I have seen compared to others I looked at, with a better build quality.  Also just because something is expensive doesn't mean it is better, they may just be making bigger margins on it.

I have a now 2 year old Miele and wont buy another.  It works great and is reasonably quiet and nice long cord. BUT the dust bag chamber gets a LOT of dust in.  I have found its much better with the non genuine bags from Countdown than the genuine.  I ended up buying a $50 vacuum cleaner from the warehouse to vacuum out the compartment.

Depends on the model, all companies have budget models, but the higher models will be better. I have never had any problems with dust in the chamber of mine. I find however with bagless vacuum brands, you get a lot of dust getting into the filtering.

doesn't matter so much which brand, it's the motorised head that gets you all the dust sucked

A lot of it is carpet fluff though. Any with a motorised head will produce that.

We've had the same Dyson for about 15 years. We've thrashed the poor thing- it sucked up plaster dust, rat fur etc. during our huge house renovation about 11 years ago and daily sucks up German shepherd and mutt hair and fire place dust. We wore out the metal on the bottom of the head so hubby bought a new head (second hand) from someplace and it' still going strong a few years later... Long may it live on!

After a series of cheapo sub-$200 vacuums, we bought a Dyson about 4 years back. Can't recall the model number, but its the one with the big orange roller ball. Its great, no bags, cleans like a demon. Our previous cheapo vac had a motorized head, but the first few runs through with the Dyson filled the catcher twice from one room.
