DizzyD: What about the sandwich approach...
Lets say a kid (your kid) is useless with a hunting rifle. He has done the training, got the licence, but still useless at handling the weapon. He is not listening or taking any of your advice on how to handle/treat a firearm.
Is this how we should approach the situation? (many teachers use this approach in our schools):
1, Praise
2, Criticism (just a bit, be careful, really careful you don't offend)
3, Some more praise
After all the hunting accidents lately I am starting to wonder if all the sandwiching is actually having the reverse effect on our society. People doing things they should not be doing, thinking they doing a great job!

I don't believe it requires a military background to understand that!

What I was getting at is that criticism can be just as effective as praise... If the person on the receiving end isn't a mummy's boy.

I like to think that the future is all about less PC correctness, less H&S rules, less worrying about what you can/cant say at the risk of somebody/something being offended. If its not, well then I feel sorry for our future generations.

Sadly this isn't how the world will be. Going forward it will just get worse and worse and worse and worse.. You get the idea.

I tend to agree. But I think it will eventually reach a tipping point.
