I just picked sport up again for the ABs season. Seems to cost me about $50/game if I watch it at the pub, so Sky is cheaper ...
Heh yeah those "hidden" costs at the pub, really add up.

I would say most of the country does have access to it now. Its only 3 years away from completion of the first stage of roll out which is supposed to cover all the urban areas.
Your dreaming, I'm 20 minutes drive away from the center of the countries biggest city and still two years away from getting fibre. Thanks Chorus.
Someone has to be first, someone has to be last, it's a massive project. I'm not even 10 minutes from central Auckland and I won't get it till the same time frame.
Yes, but the "I would say most of the country does have access to it now" statement is clearly wildly inaccurate.

Most is more than 50%, and the project is more than 50% of the project is complete, so I'd say it's very accurate :)

There are rumors a merger may be in the works, and if I am reading correctly, it's Sky who would be buying Vodafone.
Why not the other way around.
I hear there's an announcement coming soon.

Original speculation was that Sky would buy VF, which I scoffed at, but did say the other way around made more sense. If there is truth to the rumors VF is on the block as well, seems strange to continue acquisitions.
I believe it will end up being a strategic "partnership" in the end.

More or less, if its a merger. No one buys the other they "buy" each other so to speak.
Is the streaming function of a Sky decoder truly SVOD?
You have to download a good chunk of show before you start watching it, and the complete show is stored locally on your decoder's hard drive.

Gawd, this is as bad as the whole NZME/Fairfax thing, Industries under threat from disruptive tech seem to think that getting together will help them prevent the enevitable (In Sky's case global SVOD providerrs, and in VF's Case the huge uptake of messenging and VOIP reducing them to a provider of bits, with little value add.....)
If I were a Sky Shareholder I would oppose this until the ends of the earth and simply ask that they just give their current capital reservces back to shareholders, who can go and invest in a startup or two....

Sky doesnt need the money, in fact it was looking at returning funds to its shareholders. It can manage the move to SVOD itself, much of thats in place already.
VF could do with diversifying. Maybe Skys funds can fix the longstanding issue of billing and other systems that they seem to collect.
VF could also sell Sky at large discounts to its BB customers, to improve its market share.

Only need to download about 2% before you can start to watch it - roughly 13mb. Its not streaming but it is SVOD.

Can't agree about much this. Sky has really shown very little evidence it can manage this SVOD on it's own. SkyGo is a disaster, the infrastructure doesn't cope during large events and there have been some every few weeks and it's still happening.
They are giving money back to the shareholders (likely) when really, they need to use that money to improve their infrastructure. Sadly I have no faith in the leadership of Sky to a) find out what the issues are b) fix them in a way that also gives them a proper path forward for the future.
Being acquired by VF would give them a good chunk of that infrastructure, but VF has it's own issues which need urgently fixing.
I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but sadly, I can't see it somehow. Before VF makes any more "purchases" I'd like to see them fix their broken Cable bandwidth issue, and get their billing platform consolidated.
BTW, in any acquisition or merger, the funds ($400m) from Sky would not go anywhere near VF. It would be returned to shareholders

If SVOD to date is Skys finished event to move to the SVOD market I would agree, but its nearly not. They have had no need to make any changes till now, and they setup SkyGo, Neon and Fanpass so that when there is a need, its in place. To upgrade, finish, rehash. The churn last year was -700. Its not like its been bleeding subscribers for three years, far from it.
The SkyGo issue the other day was a third party issue, and FanPass the other week was also an out of house I believe.

What can Sky do? Well, their high satellite costs are here till 2019. IMO they will add HD to Neon as already known and live with it, until they know where Optus is going, expect that to be known early 2018. No point in paying more to duplicate rights across SVOD and satellite at the moment.
