I can suggest Graham Masterton. Some of his books are quite good.

Edit: Plague, Drought or Famine if you want end of the world type books. The Manitou series is worth a look too.

In no particular order, some good post apocalyptic reads.

Standalone novels:

• The Postman by David Brin (don't even get me started on the movie)
• Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard (see above about the movie, and yes I know he was the reason we have Scientology, but I still liked the book)

• Cloud Warrior by Patrick Tilley 
• Dies the Fire by S.M. Stirling

If you like the fantasy Game-of-thrones-y type stuff I thoroughly recommend The Stephen Lawhead 'Song of Albion' trilogy. 

It starts off maybe a bit slow-ish, but once past the first couple of chapters it's hard to put down.
It's fairly old now, so you probably would have to buy the eBook. The Warehouse was stocking all Lawhead's books a couple of years ago but I haven't seen them for a while.

Lawhead also has a 5-part Arthurian series which is very good.

All of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series up till his last solo book "The Teeth of the Tiger". [I haven't really enjoyed the joint writings they are just not the same]. They usually hit around 800 to 1000 pages in paperback and slightly less in trade back. You can get them now as ebooks (iBooks & Kindle).

 

 

I am sure the books are probably better than the TV Series. I didn't find Ryan likeable or relatable. Despite that I didn't mind the TV Series. To me he just seemed an incredibly unlikely candidate for the role he played.

 

If you liked the Jack Ryan TV series, also check out Bodyguard from this year. It has been suggested that the lead actor might be offered the role of James Bond after the strength of his performance in this.

To be fair I don't really think many of those are good options, though I didn't think Craig should have got it either, and he did an OK job. Certainly in my mind not a patch on Sean Connery.

The Wayward Pines trilogy.

The plot surrounds Secret Service agent Ethan Burke's introduction to the remote small town of Wayward Pines, his new home from which he cannot escape. The mysteries and horrors of the town build until Ethan discovers its secret. Then he must do his part to keep Wayward Pines protected from without and within.

Also a TV series

Well, I am into Red Rising now. I got about 60% through it whilst away. It's taking me some time to map out all the names they use for various common things, and I still get a litte lost, but the core story is relatively straight forward to copy and I like the Hunger Games type element a fair bit.
