Behodar: I don't follow. People don't install malicious apps on purpose, therefore they don't know they're there, therefore they're going to click Allow regardless. Am I missing something?

If a random popup from an app you've never heard of before appears asking for access to your clipboard in the middle of doing something else the assumption is that you're not going to click OK, compared to when you've initiated the cut&paste yourself.

Only if they have it done right because if it keeps popping up and No doesnt make it go away, then clearly yes is the correct answer. Like with the bluetooth pairing spamming that used to be a big issue with phones.

I'm not sure if you can do this in iOS, but this was an issue in some cases on Windows where the program trying to do the Bad Thing would just take control of the mouse/keyboard and click OK for you, and quickly enough that you might not notice the prompt. "You" triggering a paste operation might not be a well defined thing.

Apple iPhone, iOS 18.0.1 phone dialler.

Lance is stored in my address book with 2 numbers. I started typing out his mobile number.

  1. It suggests the 09 land line number 🤔
  2. I tap his name & it replaces the mobile number with the land line 😡

OneDrive on mobile phone is set to sync my iOS photo library. Why do I have to constantly open OneDrive for the sync to occur? Surely it should sync in the background?

In the name of power saving, apple decide to give priority to their own syncing products and screw over others.

It's the same with Android. Google apps run fine. Any other app... Good luck, if you don't open them every day they will just go to sleep and never do anything else.

The New World Clubcard website doesn't allow paste into the password field and doesn't allow auto-fill from password managers.

Zoom One Time Passcode

Was setting up Zoom on a new device when Zoom decided that I needed to verify myself.

Apparently knowing my 15 random character password is not enough.

It asks to enter a 6 digit code which it will email to me.

Over a dozen attempts have failed to produce an email in my inbox (yes I checked Junk, and I searched all folders as well, nada).

To fix this I can lodge a support request, which requires me to login, which I cant do without the OTP.

And so now it's just a vicious circle going nowhere.

Brain. Dead.

Only way around this now as far as I can see is to create a new account with a different email.

Delete cookies?! Are you insane?!

There are lots of systems that do that, TicketMaster being a prime example, where you need to respond to some verification email within x minutes but it takes 10x minutes for the email to appear, if it ever does.  Same workaround, you need to create a new account with a different email address, until it happens there too.

Great way to inflate your user numbers...

My biggest bugbear is banks and similar not putting the focus into the input field when entering the security code! You blindly type off the code only to realise it didn't do squat and then the time has run out you have a new code and it all just takes time. Small thing but huge improvement when they do it. I have written to everyone that I see not doing it. Some fix it some dont.

Software that can't accept names with double capitals or apostrophes, eg O'Brian (Obrian), McDonald (Mcdonald), etc.

Logins that will only use an email address as your username. A couple has to create a second email address so that both can log in to their accounts.

I have a double-barrel name (e.g. Alpha-Beta with a dash) which doesn't play nice with various large companies' systems. Air NZ and Spark both won't accept the dash at all, it must be removed. This means I end up being called Mr Alphabeta rather than Mr Alpha-Beta. Annoying -- I imagine there's some stupid business rule somewhere that names can only be A-Z or a-z. SMH.

I know I've said this before, but one of the guys at work came from a country/culture that only uses a single name. He had to make up a surname when he came over here, just to placate all the various systems that blindly assume everyone has at least two names.

This should be required reading.

Many years ago I read an article about the US military computer systems crashing and it was put down to a hyphenated name and the system was trying to subtract one name from the other.
