Windows OS

It's the only OS that I know of that happily connects to a previously known Wi-Fi network & then one day fails to connect. The only way to connect to the same network that was previously used, is to "forget" the known network & then connect / re-input credentials to continue using the Wi-Fi network. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Tauranga Kerbside Collections app for iOS.

The week leading into Kings Birthday weekend I received an in-app notification to say all bin collections will continue as usual.

On opening the app and reading the message then closing the app the red numerical indicator badge was still present. Open/Close again, swipe up several times. Hard phone reboot several times. Deleted and re-installed app multiple times. Reset phone and then due to another completely different reason to do with Network settings, Reset phone to factory settings and re-set up phone and re-installed the offending app.

ALL of these attempts to clear the red notification badge to no avail.

Until this particular notification all other previous notifications had worked as should. I wonder if iOS 17.6 will fix this silly fault ??

Mid week post Kings weekend I emailed Tauranga council and received and auto reply and nothing else. This week I emailed again and complained not only about the app's problem but also the lack of reply from a human for the first email. This time I got a human reply with a Waste and Sustainability Department reference number and saying "They will contact you shortly" message.

Yep you guessed it, they have not contacted me.

Grrrrrr 😡

EDIT - UPDATE 18/07: My partner noticed, this morning, that his app popped a notification up which then very quickly disappeared. Checked my phone and yes the old notification had disappeared.

Half hour later Tauranga tech department boss rang me. Yes there is/was a problem from their end. Even his own iOS phone suffered from the same bug. Apparently they fixed this by clearing all the sent notifications from their end. This apparently is a temporary fix and the developers have to write a permanent fix update when they work out what the code problem is.

So well done Tauranga council tech department for the personal touch. 👍

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

The design of settings within MS Edge is clearly arranged to make everything hard to find especially in regards to setting search options to be google-everything

Then when you get used to how to change the setting they shift everything again. Just look up instructions on how to change something within Edge and every site has different and outdated instructions.

Settings within Chrome is such a breath of fresh air.

I find the settings in Chrome/Chromium irritating with the sub-menus.

Much prefer Firefox for easy settings.

Software that when you change settings there's no apply/save button or popup saying 'changes saved'.  Just left in limbo wondering if anything happened.

I just had something (I think it was MS Teams, but there was no identifying name or icon) pop up and tell me to "check out this report". It was like some sort of hyper puppy wanting attention while I'm trying to work.

I'm going to go a little further and say "software with a settings window that doesn't respect the standards of the OS". What you described is normal for Mac apps (the logic behind it is that each setting is like a switch or knob on an appliance: these take effect immediately and don't require you to explicitly "save"), but it's not traditionally normal on Windows (although it seems to be creeping in).

I came across something the other day where the settings window had the usual "OK, Cancel, Apply" at the bottom. I made my changes and clicked "OK" and got an unexpected "You didn't apply your changes! Do you want to?". Why in the world did the developer feel the need to break the usual paradigm? Of course I want to save my changes: I clicked OK, not Cancel!

A couple of weeks ago Windows demanded that I set up a "PIN". Today I tried to use Remote Desktop to connect to another machine, and it asked for the PIN instead of the password. When I entered the PIN, it then complained that I can't use a PIN to log into that server. So why did it ask for it in the first place then?!

Even better, now that most Windows client machines are forced to use a Microsoft Account, you will find problems when using the passwordless login option - enhanced security but so secure that now that you don't have a password you can't login into RDP using that account.

I found a thing that showed how to make a local account on the OOBE with a command prompt for a new windows 11 computer, so did that and now its constantly pestering me that my onedrive is not signed in and its a security warning in the place that shows them because my files are not being backed up to onedrive.

If anything needs a slap from the EU monopoly people its that behavior. I assume that its different for EU users since crap like that is a clear abuse of it.

The saga continues...

I just got back from lunch, logged in with my PIN, and was presented with "please lock the computer and log in with your password".

[Edit: And then it defaults to PIN login again]

On a home computer I had to find the setting to hide the "you're not backing up your files" notification. The computer is used virtually exclusively for ripping Blu-rays to my NAS, so it doesn't need to be backed up.

Web pages you are prompted to enter a code (Sent via text) and you have to click your mouse in the required entry box before you enter the numbers!

Like the ANZ Secure Prompt you may or may not receive (I'm an ANZ Customer) when topping up on 2Degrees Prepay!

(Did 4 top ups of $30 ...got the prompt for 2!)

Put the cursor in the bl**dy box already so you don't have to click before entering the code!

It is a required input with only one location to enter it!

(Do I have enough !'s yet?)

Yes, that's one of my pet hates when they do not put the focus on the box required.
