Cake FTW! I loved Eve's Pantry when I lived in Auckland. Their chocolate truffle cake is my number one.

Cake.

No pie in the world can beat a dark, moist, chocolate mudcake, with a thick chocolate layer in the middle.

I generally use a cheesecake base, any of the online recipes should do.  Enough bananas to cover the top, yep it goes in the fridge to set, I wouldnt keep it more than a day or two though as the bananas discolour

Pie all the way! Ive visited that bakery in Palmerston, and got the Steak and cheese, this thing had a slab of the tenderest steak sitting on the bottom, it was pure awesomeness and rates as the best pie ive ever had!
Failing that, a Jimmys pie from roxborough is a good choice (can even get them in 1 dairy up here in Blenheim). A Chicken Camembert pie from the Bakerji in picton. Or the home made lamb/vege/stuffing pies you get from the foursquare in the bronx here in blenheim.. All good choices!

Damn it you beat me to it, can I just say that Jimmy's Pie's are best from the shop in Roxburgh and he or she (I think the actual Jimmy is long gone now) does a whole raft of different flavours you can't get anywhere else, the chicken and apricot pie easily makes my top 3 pies of all time. Its also a known fact that the further away from Roxburgh you get the worse the pies taste, they don't travel well. Its written in the law of pie somewhere under the transport section.

Its hard to go past some good cake though, and for the record I'm a cake man (carrot cake) but usually after dinner or on weekends, outside of these hours I'm a pie man, (steak and cheese).

damn good topic, well done.

OT but try putting a sugar glaze on the bananas, a little pastry brush should do the trick.

Or, er, lemon juice - hence why I suggested sprinkling this over the bananas in the recipe from my earlier post!

Re: Jimmy's Pies - Lived in Dunners for 12 years and am DEEPLY disappointed you can't get them here in Wellington. Luckily I get to return to Dunedin reasonably frequently and bring back a shopping bag full of them to freeze (and am doing so again this weekend!!)

If you can't find the caramel condensed milk, just get a can of the normal stuff, chuck it in a pot and cover with water and boil gently for at least 3 hours - voila! Caramel Condensed Milk :)

Careful when opening the tin after boiling though - can spit at you if you're not lucky!

While Jimmy's pies are excellent, I was always dissappointed by their sausage rolls - too greasy! (and that's straight from the shop in Roxburgh)

Their sugar buns are also excellent, especially the ones with the blob of jam in the middle - almost like a CAKE!!
