Yes, I agree. But probably there is buried somewhere in their TOS a clause "if your domain causes problems for other sites we will unplug it"... And most likely they invoke this without even blinking - or contacting the owner...

http://www.rackspacecloud.com/legal#Suspension

The clause allows them to suspend services if they reckon that there is a risk to their network or other clients (among other reasons).  The clause says that they will notify you first, unless they think there's an imminent risk to their network or services for other customers.

So yeah, they stuck within the letter of the agreement and no compensation for you - in face they may even hit you with a $150 reconnection fee!  That said, Rackspace shouldn't even blink an eye at 15,000 connections.  They host Web Hosting Talk for heck sake!

The main problem I have with it all, is that name suppression is generally (yes, there are exceptions) given to protect the identity of the victim. As far as I know, the news reports haven't stated the reason for the name suppression. In two of the cases, police has stated that release of the name can lead to identification of the victims. Cam has decided for himself (with God knows what information)  that a judge is wrong in these cases and to release the information without regard for the victim.

Yeah, that too, considering one of the cases involves their own child, it'll alienate that child for life :(

I have moved across the ditch.  Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Also it's a good idea to set up a free pingdom account, configure it to do a http request to your home page every 10min and send you a txt or twitter direct message if it's down or not reachable two times in a row (ie: down for 20min).

Great way to identify dns outages, server downtime or routing problems very quickly.

According to the Rackspace guys the load came on and was affecting the other clients so they decided to shut me down. That is the part that makes me annoyed, there was no contact, nothing, they just did it. Mosso should have coped, absolutely.

For those interested my site is Wordpress on MySql, at the time of going down there were 15,000 simultaneous connections and the weren't releasing, or so they say. In my old Mainframe days we would call that blackholing the server and that is pretty much what happened.

That sounds consistent withmost of my load testing done to date. Hence my comment about being paid to be paranoid. I am guessing the 15k connections were to MySQL? Guessing (and it is a guess based on what I have seen before) CPU(s) would have spiked at 100% for a period of time as they tried to keep up, then dropped down to 0% as the db cr@ps out? The DB would have held the connections as it was by then in an unknown state most likely. Happens often and it usually doesn't matter how powerful the hardware is...usually, more powerful the box(es) just take a marginally longer time to collapse. 15K simultanious connections is a hell of a lot, and I would say simply wasn't included in capacity planning by the hosting org - considering all this traffic is hitting 1 database instance (guessing its a schema in mySQL rather than an dedicated install of mySQL just for the blog).
